using m500

Hi, I am not educated on changing or modifying settings, I have changed to a geared extruder and must change the steps from 96 to 500, I was told to change the value on the eprom screen which I have been doing manually before each time I use the machine, the setting reverts back to 96 . It was suggested I set to 500 and then "send an M500 to store it. Can someone please explain where and how to do this. I am using Cura for my slicer.

ps. please keep it simple, I am 80yrs young.

Thank you
Terry

Hello Terry, welcome to our forum!

M500 is a command that you can send to your printer when you connect it to your computer via USB. I recommend getting a piece of free software called 'pronterface'. This allows you to connect to your printer through serial connection (over usb). Then you can send the M500 command to store the settings.

Ps, close.down cura when connecting, I noticed cura 'hijacks' the serial bus making it impossible to connect with pronterface. Pronterface is a nifty tool by itself. It allows you to send commands and move the axes by a set amount so you can troubleshoot and configure your printer with ease!

Thank you for your reply, I am hoping to figure it out using Cura, took me a month of Sundays to get up and running with Cura. I had a suggestion to put the command into the startup g-code but again don.t know how.

Does your machine have an LCD? If you change the steps/mm there you should be able to select 'store settings' in the lcd menu. I can also make a few screenshots of how it could be done in cura or a text editor, heck, I'll even write the gcode for you into a file and upload it here. I'm on my phone right now so it's hard to explain without cura in front of me. Let me.get back to this.

Hello Terry, I dug a bit deeper and indeed it should be possible to send M500 in Cura itself if you connect the printer through USB to your computer!

In the following screenshot I have highlighted the important bits in red:
