vertical ridges in round portions of prints
January 10, 2015 07:44AM
Hello,

I'm new to the forum.
I have an Orcabot 3D Printer.

For some time now, the printer is acting a bit strange.
There are some vertical ribs in all the 3D prints.
But only on the curved parts, straight parts don't have the same issue.
I printed a ring for example. this used to be smooth.
are there some settings in the firmware I can change?
thanks in advance guys,

Is this the same print as what you had done before? As in the same model? It is possible the 'resolution' of the model is different. The motors don't actually move in a perfect circle, they make a lot of tiny straight lines to make it look like a circle.

Yes its the same model.
the ribs occur in all prints I make, models I printed before look a lot smoother.

Have you checked if the belts are loose ?
how is the manual movement of the carriers when the steppers are not connected to the board, it should rund relatively smooth with no stumble.

The belts are good, the run very smooth.

A friend told me to check the XY jerk.
What should be a good setting?
I tried 0 and 200 there is a difference but small.
Is there a way to increase the XY resolution? I think maybe the resolution is poor.

You can only change the resolution by using different motors (0.9° instead of 1.8°) and a new electronics which is capable of 1/16 stepping or even more.
but thats not the issue of your printquality.

Yerk should be about 10-15 and acceleration about 1000 to 1500 on a stock Orca.

a other issue maybe a faulty electronics where the stepper is only making fullsteps anymore instead of microstepping, but i don`t think this is the issue.

can you make a video when you print the round part ?

took a while, but here is a video.

Looking at it print, Maybe its the micro stepping not working.
I think it looks like it.

Doesn`t sound like its running on full step, for me it sounds normally (except on that z-hop, i wouldn`t do that, it only costs speed)
Not easy to tell why it`s doing that on the video sad smiley
Can you upload the gcode file of the 2nd part
?

Maybe you can make a video when the printer is off, and moving the axis around while seeing the belts (overview) and to listen to the sound of them.

I was having the same issue with my printer. I went onto the irc and a few members stated that it could be the model itself. Possible that the circles do not have enough segments?
