Shorted out printer whilst plugging in USB now motors wont move. Prusa i3.

Posted by louisjamesbanks
Hi,

I've got this Prusa i3 printer- [www.aliexpress.com]

My printer's motors were able to work fine before this incident:
I was plugging in the USB and must have knocked it somewhere on the board, I didn't see where but heard the infamous shorting out noise.
The LCD lost its text and then did a reboot and I then plugged in the printer.
I then tried to print something, the bed and hot end heated up as normal but when the printing began no motors moved, no the X Y or Z.
Does this mean I need a new board?

Most likely something is fried and without good electronics knowledge you are better off to get a replacement.
Thought I would need to. I have a MKS Gen-2Z v1.1 board. Could I swap this out for a RAMPS 1.4?

You could, but you would probably get better value form a more modern board, such as Duet or Smoothieboard. Arduino/RAMPS has its own set of problems.

Disclosure: I design Duet electronics and work on RepRapFirmware, [duet3d.com].

When you turn it on, what happens? What are the lights on the control board doing?
