Prints getting shunted sideways part way up

Okay, this is not a consistent problem.
I have a print right now that about a mm or so up from the base
has been moved 2mm across. What is causes this? Is this one of
those comms errors i've heard pronterface suffers from?

Shifted layers are from the motor skipping steps.

Lots of possible causes, take a look through this excellent summary: [reprap.org]

Hey folks,
I hadn't realised the USB comms were so dicky. I think I will write it off
as just that. Time to dig out the old SD cards.

Thanks for the help.

If a print shifts and stays shifted, or continues to shift, I don't think that is a usb comms problem. The g-code coordinates are absolute, so you can't get an offset through a comms problem.

Without a picture, without knowing what sort of machine you have, and without knowing any of the printing parameters such as speed, acceleration, and jerk, it's pretty hard to say what is causing your problem.

The erratic occurrence of this problem make me lean towards a comms error.
I'll reprint the same model a few times and the problem won't occur.
A bit annoying but I think I'll switch to SD card for big stuff from now on.

Thanks folks for the help.
