Stepper Motors and Endstops

Hey guys, so I'm a mechanical engineering student with limited electronics experience and I'm (re)building an old-ish rapman 3d printer that I bought on craigslist. The guy claimed it was working completely, and it just had a few broken supports. I got all the supports fixed and I've gotten everything on the electronics side to work except for ALL 3 motors will only move away from the endstops. However, when the endstops are depressed, they will move in any direction. I'm no good with electronics, so I've looked into some other forums and some people have said it could be a problem with the firmware? I've updated the firmware, but I don't know that much about it so could that still be the issue? Or is it maybe a wiring issue? I've also tried connecting the older 3.1 board to it and it had the exact same problem. Thanks!

Chances are that your endstops are inverted in the firmware. Check your configuration.h, and search for invert and end stop. There should be some lines that say whether your endstops are inverted or not. Change from false to true, or vice versa.

First of all, thanks so much for the quick response!

Now, this might be a dumb question, but do you happen to know how I might edit the firmware? It's rapman-specific firmware so I'm not sure if it's different than others.

Thanks again!

If you can't get a sirce for the firmware you next best option would be to suitable switches.
Assuming mechancial endstops, chances are they already have a NO and NC connection - most just leave the terminal out.
In case you can't substitude here an old mcriwave is a great source of "limit switches" - just behind the front door is a whole bunch of them winking smiley
