Suddenly shifting over while printing?

Hello

I just built this printer last month and it was working properly, but now I cannot get a single successful print of any size. I am used to working with my brother's Robo but this is the first printer of my own.

Everything will go correctly for a while but after a minute or so, the extruder seemingly forgets its place and just begins printing in a different place as seen in the image below.
((The print in the image below also had some other problems as you may notice but I have sorted those out))

I have tightened the strings and tinkered with the settings but nothing seems to change much. Oiling the rods will fix problem for a print or two, but it does not seem right that I would need to oil them after every print. It almost seems to happen randomly. I was considering putting some violin string rosin on the strings to help prevent slipping but I didn't want to attempt that without input from someone experienced. confused smiley

Any advice is greatly appreciated grinning smiley

First things first, welcome to the forum, and congratulations on building your printer smiling smiley

Interesting choice of printer, curious what attracted you to that particular model?

There's quite a lot of possible causes for shifted layers, so you pretty much have to work your way through them one by one until you find the culprit. There's a wiki page that describes the issues: [reprap.org]

If I was going to make a wild guess, I might start with checking that the pulleys aren't slipping on the motor shafts (mark the ends of the shafts and the pulleys with a sharpie so you can see if they get out of alignment), and checking the stepper drive currents aren't too low (not enough torque causing missed steps) or too high (drivers overheat and cut out causing missed steps again).

James, thank you for your reply and that incredible resource! I will definitely read and work through those tonight.

As for why I chose this printer, I was looking for a printer with a good print volume that would fit my budget. It has a build volume of 200x200x200mm which was a lot more than others of the same price and simple enough to assemble. At the same time it is small enough to fit in my dorm room. As a plus, BobsCNC is a small family business with great reviews and excellent customer service, so it was the perfect fit for my needs. smiling smiley
