Periodic patterns on outer shell
June 21, 2017 09:32AM
Hi, I am getting some periodic patterns on mu outer shell. I think it is about extrusion because its phase changes although period doesn't by layers. It is like over-extruding every X millimeter of filament. Here is a picture:

Any ideas?

Ungeared extruders do that, even with 16:1 ustepping. You can play with the extruder current to tweak the way it looks, but it won't go away completely unless you use a geared extruder which increases the "resolution" of the extrusion process.

You may have a bit of over-extrusion going on, too.

I only have direct drive extruders on my printers and have never seen a pattern like that.
Are you sure your drive gear is clean and "round"? I've had chinese drive gears that weren't cut evenly. As a result the filament slipped a bit on every turn.

I have the same problem also. I tried changing;

  • the Smoothie board with new one (new drivers)
  • Extruder motor
  • Dampers on X and Y motors
  • the Smoothie stepping from 1/32 to 1/16
  • printing speed (low speed)

However, the problem is continues!
