PLA print quality temperature tower / fan speed / fan duct

Hey Guys!

After flickering around and fixing various problems with my printer its running "smoothly" now... the only thing the print quality is not as i expected... Well... it prints... and it prints Okay as long as i make Straight - verticall - walls. I couldn't excactly identify the problem within the pictorial guide i have to say...
When it comes to overhangs or small prints (like realy small ( 5 x 5 mm)) the quality is... hmmmmmmm.... disgusting... yep...

I am printing with 185 ° C and using 70° for the heated bed... this gave me good results...
Just printed a small temperature calibration tower... It looks horrible... (Disgusting?!?... yea definitly)

have a look...
I also was printing the MK8 Mount ... i should work but also there you cann see the errors when comming to smaller areas...

I could also observe the same error when printing bigger parts that have an inclinated (not overhanging) survace towards the center... e.g. Spool holders/wheels

After printing the Temperature calibration tower I am not sure if its still a problem of the temperature or insufficent cooling from the fan... I am using the "stock" cooler that comes with the gregs wade extruder kit. It has a very wide opening and is blowing generously over the print and the nozzle aswell I guess... I used a different fan ducht before but I felt it was to narrow for the fan to handle it... To much resistance... so i swapped back to the old one again...

Do these errors come from insufficent cooling or am i printing to fast?
What fan ducts do you use with which fan? Axial or radial fan?

Cheers and thank you for the help,
Luke

Looks like you have a lot of over extrusion.

did you do extruder-calibration linke this? e-steps
Which Slicer are you using? - Which version?

Hey...

X Y and Z axis are calibrated with the cube and measuring 100 mm various times.
I am using Slic3r 1.3.0-dev.
Extrusion settings are 1.

Especially looking at IMG_2615 it seems like its a cooling problem? O.o ???
On the small tower (its not more than 1cm x 1cm) it maybe also a problem with print speed...

Any hints or tips are apreshiated...

Regards
Luke

Layer thickness looks high. Usual recommendation is no greater than 80% of nozzle diameter.
Temperature column seems to indicate 180-185 is where you want to be.

Hey guys!

Some time passed on and I printed myself a new fan duct. (Hesine M-505, Anet A8 - Center Nozzle Fan)
Its the round one that goes around the print directly... with that I was able to increase the print quality a lot...
Before I used a axial fan.

Here are the results. Have a look. All 3 prints marked with the dots on the top: from Left to right: Axial fan 100% print speed, Radial fan 50% print speed, radial fan 100% print speed.

It now looks reaaaallllyyy nice winking smiley

Someone knows how to set printspeed in Slic3r for really small parts or single areas on prints?

Yippi yeah winking smiley ty so far.

Bannana Luke:

Why is it there appears to be no change on each level based on temp? Was the whole tower done at the same temp?

looks to hot and too fast IMO....

Still that fan is an improvement smiling smiley going the right direction that's for sure!

Hey Ho!
Just checked the G code.
M109 S190 (S XXX for temperature) each 10 mm ... so the Code is fine.

To hot? IMO 185°C looks very nice ;/ just the parallelograms on the right of the picture seem to need further improvments...

Any furhter tips?

cherio!

Have you tried lowering the print speed any?

For giggles, I gave this a try. I think the piece is just too small and does require a very slow speed to make it look decent. But, comparing mine to your pictures, I still think you are over extruding quite a bit. Try a .95 or even .90 until you start seeing gaps or the layers won't adhere. Then bump it back up.

Hey!
Thank you.
I Will give that a try tomorrow.
