XY goes random nonsense positioning during print
November 21, 2024 12:18PM
Hello. I build my own printer cartesian style around skr 1.4 turbo and using Marlin 2.9.0.1 / Marlin-2.1.2 and now Marlin-2.1.2.5. As slicer i use S3D and i tried Cura few times
At first everything worked fine, but later..
1: from time to time i have random movement of xy during print, hotend goes to end of hotbed without extruding, and then get back to print position and it contiunes normal! Problem is not big deal as print is fine in the end but still i dont know what couse it.
2: During print, at first/second layer, hotend move to random position on bed still extruding, then it get back to print position and contiunes normaly. Still, print is done so its not big problem. Line thats out of print is seen on picture
3: Hotend randomly stops for few second and then continues normally. Temps is normal, not fluctuating
4: Worst problem of all.. : Z axis goes to up position at very fast speed and continues printing mid air, in that case print is fcked as seen in image.
Still, usually it prints normal without all (some) mentioned problems.
Board is skr 1.4 turbo, curent firmware marlin 2.1.2.5 but its same with other two.
That happend i think after i changed homing/probe feedrate and Z feedrate to properly match my configuration. I also enabled junction deviation and did proper calibration. I dont understand what could be real problem, i even suspect motherboard.
Any help would be appreciated!

Again with same print, at layer 25 (5mm height) hotend stops and pause for ~10 min and it continues printing. In previous print, at 5mm height Z axis gone wild and broke job. I checked gcode, there is no pause statement etc, everything is normal.
Now i suspect that problem might be tmc2209 drivers overheating (or even chips on skr 1.4t) as printer is closed. So at high temperature it stops as temp overprotection or if it fails to do, other crazy things happend. Im not sure if thats case
But still, from begining of print, from time to time hotend goes out of print region to end side of heatbed and back to working... weird!

... SD-card or USB connection? - if USB, then the connection could be "noisy" for too long or bad cable or too much EMI

SD card. Tried different formated cards just in case.

... is a display attached?

Yes, i use custom oled 2.42" on exp1/2 and arduino SD is connected there. So ti be clear, everything worked fine for month/two or so and sudenly it starts doing this things. Thx

Update: Printing from laptop over usb give no problem at all. I belive problem is emi noise, i need some shielding work of sd/lcd part to do

I used Aluminum foil duct tape, and I shielded the cables from all EMI noise.

I covered the Display cables with painters tape then attached to the frame using Aluminum foil duct tape.
The painters tape keeps the Aluminum foil duct tape from making the cables sticky if you ever want to remove it.

I stuck the Aluminum foil duct tape inside my controller case cover making sure to ground it.

This was my simple trick for stopping the crazy movements my 3D Printer was making by shielding cables from EMI.
I saw no need to EMI protect Stepper motor cables, I EMI protected The controller, display and rotary control cables.
3D Printed 8 years now no more crazy movements.

This may or may not be your solution this was what worked for me 8 years ago.

Thanx, very informative! I will try it asap. Lost days and nights trying to figure out and all this time, it was damned EMI!

Cannot say for sure, My 3D Printers moves had random detours for quite some time before thinking it could be EMI noise.
Basically just shielding the controller helped dramatically though because of the long cable runs to display/rotary click encoder.
Still I experienced much less random movements, then using the dual tape method solved the problem.

So is this solution working on your random movement.

I put some alu tape in zone of lcd(and small oled for temp reading),sd extender and exp1,2 and everything work fine now! Later i will print motherboard top enclosure for tmc cooling and will put some alu tape there also. Thank you!!!!
