feature proposal, set time of print instead of speed

feature proposal, set time of print instead of speed

Usually quality of print is inversely proportional to speed. Sometime i just need a piece not perfect, and i have limited time to print it (for example because i need to sleep, or to go out).
I would love the possibility of saying to Slic3r "Do the best that you can in 2 hours". Maybe that would need the definition of maximum and minimum speeds, and it could use the actual speed settings as hints of the proportions between speeds..

It's sad that i don't know a word of perl, or i would give it a try myself..

Another solution is to use emc2: it has a slider to increase/decrease the global speed. Very usefull for small layers, or, as you say, when it's time to sleep! I use that feature very often.

Maybe this could be implemented in dedicated hardwares, through a little jog?

You can't estabilish any relationship between print speeds and total time without knowing exactly the firmware acceleration parameters and the firmware acceleration logic. This is the same reason that prevents Slic3r to estimate print time.

A global speed modifier would belong more properly to the firmware or to the host software.

umm.. i didn't think about the acceleration problem..
so maybe a potentiometer on the machine could be enough to set a global speed coefficient.. i'll try to put my dirty hands on the firmware smiling smiley

I think that would better be done in the host software. It sends all the feedrates, so it could just multiply them by a factor before sending (although that wouldnt work for those thay print from SD.

I just had another idea of speeding up the printjob.

what if the inner (not seen) perimeters can be printed faster than the outer one ?
i don`t mean the "small perimeter" function, i mean if the outer skin is with for example 4 perimeter, the inner 3 are printed faster?

Often more perimeter are just needed because on one level of the printed part is a relative flat surface but not the rest.

or second idea would be variable perimeters, if a layer is reaching a defined angle the perimeter count will be raised some layers before ?

Why print more than one outline anyway? Can't get faster than that!

Because you get holes on very flat surfaces !
Just look at the Pictures from RichRap`s Blog

That problem is corrected by more solid layers, you don't need more perimeters.

But only if the last part ist flat, what if there is at some other point in the middle such an surface ?
(for example the pink panther lady )

Solid layers is not just for flat surfaces. It ensures there are always n solid layers vertically between outside and the inside.
