Infill does not touch perimeter

Infill does not touch perimeter
April 17, 2012 06:08AM
Hi all,
I am slicing with slic3r, but my first layers will show a gap between perimeters and the fill.
I am missing the parameter that will allow the fill to overlap with the perimeter (as skeinforge has)

My result will therefore end-up with one or more filament lines being loose and possible be peeled off.

Is there a slic3r setting to force fill over perimeter?

It sounds like your E-steps is not correct. Try adjusting the extrusion multiplier until you have enough plastic flowing to get the correct infill.

Or your Z home height isn't low enough. And your extrusion isn't being squished flat enough. Pics would help.

I will try to get the effect on camera.
However, the question remains... Is there a parameter like the skeinforge parameter that allows the infill to overlap with the perimeter?

No because if you have your machine calibrated correctly you will never need to adjust it.

I've been having a similar issue, where the strands are too far apart and the object is not air/liquid tight.

So to clarify - set up E-steps first, by measuring the actual feed of the extruder.

Then print (sample shape?) with 100% infill and adjust the extrusion multiplier parameter (larger than 1 means more filament is being extruded, correct?)

Changing the extrusion multiplier is almost the same as changing your E-steps per mm. Once you find an extrusion multiplier that works you can multiply your e-steps by that number and then reset the extrusion multiplier to 1.

But yes it is best to adjust your e-steps through measuring the filament travel when you request 40mm in pronterface. Be sure you have the nozzle installed on the hotend and have it hot. Make sure its a fairly large number as the added resistance of going through the hotend can make the hobbed bolt slip and this only shows up after extruding all the already molten plastic from your hotend.

Backlash is also a problem which can result in a gap between the infill and the perimeter.

But that is also something you should get rid of properly, not with a band-aid like the infill overlap parameter.

FWIW, 0.7.2b carries a little regression causing poor extrudate where infill and perimeters touch in solid surfaces. I fixed it, and next release will thus restore the previous behavior.

once one changes infill extrusion width, so it differs from perimeter extrusion width ,
infill does not touch perimeter anymore, so something seems buggy there...

btw. infill overlap IS usefull when printing ABS as threads do shrink while printing (try turning on fan when printing solid infill)
one can also use it as hack to turn overlap into extra structual support inside model (just inbetween perimeter and infill) as overlap provides tiny 'bump' to which
next layers stick better.

in general this is very good setting, and i find it missing.
