How to set what side of a part should be the bottom
May 14, 2012 09:51PM
I have a part I need to print, but it's oriented wrong, the bottom is on the side when it comes out of Slic3r, so there is a big overhang. If I can make the bottom be on the print bed it will print fine. How do I do this?
Thanks,
Ken

Until the new interface of Slic3r is out, you can use another software to rotate your stl file.

I'm using netfabb studio basic, which is free but require registration. Actually anything that can read and write STLs will do.

Most of my technical comments should be correct, but is THIS one ?
Anyway, as a rule of thumb, always double check what people write.

I was afraid of that, I'm always jsut one rev away from what I need.
I'm using Solidworks to create the files, one would think I could "rotate" the part there when I export it as an STL, but so far I don't see how to do that either. Looks like more to learn in any case.
Thanks for the quick answer.

SUPER Easy to create new coordinate system in Solidworks.

In SolidWorks go Insert->Reference geometry->Coordinate system.

Place your new coordinate system using vertexs and linear edge to ajust it to the right location and axis direction.

Go File->Save As...Set "Save as type" to STL...Select the Option button, and down in the bottom of the pop-up menu, you can select your new coordinate system from the "Output coordinate system" drop down.

Thanks Everso, I figured there was some way to do it.
