Advanced Tab Clarificationof Version 0.8.4.

Advanced Tab Clarificationof Version 0.8.4.

I am trying to understand, in the Extrusion area of the Advanced tab of Version 0.8.4, the relationship in % between the settings and the layer heights. Is the below correct?

Extrusion Width = % of Layer Height (Print Settings Tab)
First Layer Extrusion Width = % of First Layer Height (Print Settings Tab)
Perimeter Extrusion Width = % of Layer Height (Print Settings Tab)
Infill Extrusion Width = % Layer Height (Print Settings Tab)

The 2 most unclear are First Layer and Infill. So my question are thus:

Is the First Layer Extrusion Width % based on First Layer Height or just Layer Height?

and

Is the Infill Extrusion Width % based on Layer Height? Is it based on First Layer Height. Or, is it based on First Layer Height for the first layer and then Layer Height for all subsequent layers?

Any info is appreciated greatly

In 0.8.3 there was bug that the width was calculated from the layer height not the first layer height. It has now been fixed in 0.8.4 by the looks of it [github.com]

Now thats a good question.

I have to ask. Why are you using the percentage? The best new feature in my opinion is the fact you can enter those as actual widths and never have to adjust them again when you change layer heights.

We tried printing with actual widths (mm) and the perimeters and brims printed fine but the infill/solid gave terrible results. They were bloby and torn. We are tried to use % to see if it would give a different result and thus discovered the confusion about these setting. The results of printing with % so far are the same as printing with (mm). When we turn off any solid layers, we get perfect prints. Would the bridge flow ratio have any bearing on the infill/solid layer?

As great as this program is, it feels like it is headed for the early (and continuous) problems of skeingforge in that there are changes being made to the software but the documentation is not keeping up. This is not a slight, merely an observation. Putting my money where my mouth is, I would gladly maintain a wiki if I were given the info to maintain it.

Depending on the layer heights and the infill type this does happen. If you are using low layer heights you should use honeycomb infill or concentric (or rectilinear with infill every N layers set to something that equals around a 1.5 w/t).

Also when using low layer heights you need to set the number of solid surfaces to equal at least .7mm total thickness (0.1 layers and 8 solid layers is what I use)

I am not a developer just someone like yourself that tries to help out to lessen the work load on Alex so he can get the important parts done. If you would like to maintain the Wiki I believe you can clone his GitHub repo and make changes to the wiki and ask him to merge them whenever you think it is needed. [github.com]

What's the definition of 'low layer heights' in this context? 0.1? 0.15? 0.2?

Does anyone know if the bridge flow ratio would reduce the solid layer plastic amount? Is anyone else having solid layer issues within their first 3 layers?

It depends on your nozzle size and printing width. But for a 0.5 nozzle anything below 0.2 starts to have issues with breaking up into little towers when printing with PLA and rectilinear or line infill as they cross over each other. The other infill types stack layer on layer like the perimeters ( I do not use ABS ).

Yes a lot of people had issues and there is a bug report about it. Have a look through [github.com] it may still be open or they may have done something already and it may be what you are seeing.
