Skic3r 0.8.4 possible bug

Skic3r 0.8.4 possible bug
June 29, 2012 07:17AM
I'm printing a standard calibration part and slic3r is not making the correct geode. It appears to be thinking that the extrusion width is zero when printing the outside perimeter of an object. I think it may also be making the same mistake when printing holes. When I print an object that is 10mm wide, what I get is an object that is 10mm + the extrusion width. I have raised an issue on github. Can some one please verify what I am saying. Gcode before for printing the perimeter (2 shells) of something that is 22mm wide. My extrusion width is 0.26mm.

G1 X102.338 Y95.000 F7800.000
G1 X80.380 Y95.000 F270.000 E2.72169

I have spent two days trying to fiddle with setting to remove the error but have not succeeded and, having looked at the geode, I thing slic3r is at fault. I've not noticed this before because my printing has only just got good enough to make this discrepancy repeatable.

Can someone please test this for me. Please print, using slic3r 0.8.4 and Pronterface the following object. It's a 1cm wide slot and a 1cm peg. When I print it, the beg is too large for the hole. In fact, the peg is one extrude width (look in the gcode file) too wide and the slot is one extrude width too narrow.

Perimeter test

You may need to fix it with cloud.netfabb.com

Let me know what you find.

Printed. Sorry, I don't use Pronterface, but I used: ABS, Greg's with .35 J-Head, Slic3r, Repetier host & frimware

Small block I measured at 10.0mm wide, slot is 9.75, but I can force it in.

Thanks, I think the issue is with slic3r. Is that what you used for slicing? I think maybe not?

I used slicer 8.4.

I printed your perimeter-wt-stl (perimeterwt_fixed.stl) three times. Here are the print results:

a) Pronterface + Slic3r V.0.8.4
block = 10.4 mm, slot = 9.3 mm

b) Pronterface + Slic3r V0.8.3
block = 10.3 mm, slot = 9.4 mm

c) Pronterface + Skeinforge
block = 10.3 mm, slot = 9.4 mm

that's weird because the size of the STL in netfab is 10.01 mm for the slot and 9.98 for the block

but it coherent with a bug i just reported [github.com]

Thanks for doing this, flurin. A bu has been found in slic3r 084. I'm testing the fix now.

Adjusted my Extrusion Multiplier to 0.87 as my extrusion width was coming out at 0.64 when is should have been 0.56.

And...

Slot = 9.96mm
Peg = 9.98mm

Problem solved.

This fix will go into the next release of slic3r, 0.8.5 I suppose.

I tried to print this:
[www.thingiverse.com]

and found that the dovetail tabs are too big to fit in the slots by about a mm.

Is this the same issue?

(I ground them down and epoxied everything together, so no harm no foul, but this does seem like a bug in 0.8.4

The Bug adds 0.1mm to all outer walls. So if your print is 1mm to large then Slic3r 0.8.4 is only part of the problem the rest is your calibration or extrusion multiplier.

@Sublime
As far as I know the filament diameter and the Extrusion multiplier are used to calculate the plastic volume. Some people use the extrusion multiplier to correct the volume. But the reason is the diameter, therfore I usually measure the filament diameter several time and set the value e.g. 1.7 instead of 1.75 and don't change the extrusion multiplier.
