Slic3r won't open. Uninitialized value in subroutine RAAAAAH!
November 24, 2012 04:56PM
Hi,
I installed Repetier host v080 with slic3r. Used it a couple of days, but now Slic3r won't open. Also the stand alone versions won't open, or older versions.
It slices strangely enough when only called from Repetier host. But the button configuration won't open slic3r as it did earlier.
I uninstalled, cleaned my registry, tried to load other config.ini files, but nothing works. Is there a hidden corrupt config file somewhere hidden in the window files?
The error I get in repetier host when opening Slic3r config (where is the log file stored from repetier host??)
use of unintentialized value in subroutine entry at blablabla lib/std/slic3r/gui/optionsgroup.pm line 183.
Dat directory doesn't excist..

Hope someone can help.

Bart

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

After read some posts I cleaned my registry, where the settings seems to be stored (strange, very strange imo). But that didn't solve it.

It turns out that the settings (always showing up in a new install are stored in:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Slic3r
deleting them did the trick.

DON'T HIDE IT SO DEEP!!!
At least not when wrong settings can cause this kind of problems, so not starting submodules.
I assume it has something to do with dual extrusion, but don't know.

TOOK ME 4 HOURS!
And no normally I'm not shouting. Really annoying this
Grmpf.
Such a nice program.
even get it to print dual colored objects on my Makerbot Replicator
I was so enthusiastic
still a little angry

ok, it is a nice program
it's free
but come on!
ok, probably a lot of nice people working on it

but changing that config is stupid!!!
working in their spare time
neglecting their family
I shouldn't shouting...

sorry
apologies
I'm happy again with slic3r
hope you continue developing
ok
bye

It's not slic3rs fault. In the old days, XP, programs could write to the My Program's folder and it was easy to find settings. Then nasty people realised that one program's could then modify the code and settings for other program's. So now, settings are stored where you found them and one program can no longer modify the settings of another unless the program is running as admin. I'd create a shortcut on your desktop to remind you.

Using ABSPrusa Mendel Zaphod with Pronterface and slic3r 1.3.0. Printing well with 3mm PLA and ABS through 2 x J Head Mk IV b and Wade Geared Exruders. Controlled using RAMPS1.4 board running Marlin_v1.1.9

But application configuration settings are supposed to go into %APPDATA%!

Really? o sorry, I was used to Kisslicer (settings in the same folder as the program) and ReplicatorG and Skeinforge which store it directly under the user name.
Also the version of Slic3r, bundled with ReplicatorG had its default settings in a folder of the .exe and the changed config also there.
But good to know.
Anyway, another beginner can find this problem faster now ;-)

Sorry making such a noise about this!
Bart
For those of you running a mac and repetier who ran into this issue, the .ini files you need to delete are in:

User/Library/Application Support/Slic3r/

if you cant see the library folder, google how to enable the visibility of that.

delete from the filament, print, and printer folders under that location. did the trick for me.

might want to back them up if you worked real hard to get them right before you botched them.

Hi,

I'm using Win7 in Swiss French mode, Slic3r 0.9.9 and I have the same problem. I solved it when I found the right files :

C:\UsersUserName\AppData\Roaming\Slic3r\slic3r.ini

Change UserName...

I meet the problem when I try to go in expert mode.
I need to rewrite the mode in the file: change 'expert' to 'simple'.

So... how to use the expert mode with Win7 in an other language than English?

Best regards

Hi Bart,

I know this was a while ago, but I am also having issues opening up Slic3r for windows. when I click on the application, a box pops up to "run", but after clicking that, nothing happens. (without going to far into it, i tried inputing a new post-processing script in the output option to convert the .gcode to .x3g, and slic3r immediately crashed and it's never been able to open since). I've tried deleting all of the files and re-downloading slic3r, and the same thing happens. I tried looking in that location that you mentioned in this thread, (C:\UsersUserName\AppData\Roaming\Slic3r\slic3r.ini) but that location does not exist for me.

Any suggestions on what i could do in this situation? Again, I can't even get Slic3r to open for me at all anymore.

thanks so much.

Thanks for posting your solution, Bart.

I was in exactly the same situation as you, dhupp...probably following the same gpx post-processing instructions. You do in fact have an AppData folder there, and bart's solution works. You just have to change the windows folder explorer window to show hidden files.
In windows 7 do this:
click the windows icon down at your start bar
In the "search programs and files" search bar type "folder options"
go into the "View" tab
find "Hidden Files and Folders" and tick the "show hidden files, folders, and drives" option....

You should now be able to see the AppData folder in C:\UsersUserName\ directory.
Since I'm not a subtle guy, once I found it in the AppData foler I deleted the whole slic3r subfolder.
Slic3r worked after reinstallation.
Annoying, right?
