Honeycomb infill: first layer displacement

Honeycomb infill: first layer displacement
December 24, 2013 01:39PM
Hi All,

I use Slic3r most times with honeycomb infill, after first 3 solid layers.

However, recently I start slicing without the first solid layers. (Zero bottom) And my observation is that the first layer is offset from all next layers.
So the first layer honeycomb is nice, than the secons is somewhere 1/3 displaced and all others fit nicely on the second.

I did not notice this before as I uerd solid bottom layers before.

Is this actual as it should be ? Or is there a parameter that I misuse or forget ?

i just started to do the same thing, my idea is for some fan guards and maybe a air filter holder. would be nice not to have to pick it clean after.

So,
you experience the same issue ?
Did you solve it ?

No not yet. Im in the same bucket like you

Is your object straight? (like a tube or box?) The infill will follow the contour of a shape so if your object moves X,Y from layer to layer the infill will follow. You could also just make the shape in your 3D software but I know that's not as simple a solution.

on mine, when i print with no top or bottom layers, the first layer of the hex pattern is both not the same infil percent and its also not lined up.

you can see it in this file. takes a little thinking to get them to fit in the file size limits.

I think I don't understand, or you're wrong :-)

any object that I give honeycomb infill with at least one (1) solid layer on the bottom, will align the honeycombs up to the top, whatever outline the object has.
However with zero solid on bottom layers, only the first layer will difference. Also when first layers are even circles.

Well I just created a simple cylinder and the honeycomb looks to me to be aligned top to bottom.

Here is a much closer look at just the first few layers of the cylinder object.

Maybe if you upload your object and an image of your results it might make determining the cause easier.

looks good, however....... did you print it ?

give it a go for 3 layers and take the picture again ?

On the gcode I posted you can see it if you put it in a gcode viewer.

in the picture you can see more than one hex pattern that is printed.

I would take a guess and say you are using a different layer height and extrusion width for the first layer(s) (maybe the default settings) which results in requiring a different spacing to achieve the same density. Or in other words if the extrusions are larger for the first layer it will space them apart further to equal the requested infill density.

OK I printed 7 layers (.35mmm nozzle).

Looks aligned to me. The first layer is of course a tiny bit larger due to being squished flat but that's all.

This is the cylinder I showed above.

i will have to print and check it out, but i think sublime might be onto something there,

what are your first layer settings set at tmorris9.?

I just took my everyday setting (normally solid fill) and set top & bottom "solid layers" to 0 then I set infill to 10% and honeycomb.

I don't even know how to set a different layer height for bottom layer. Now under advance (layer width) I am using all -0- (default).

in layers and perimeters, its the second option.

i remembered reading sometime that its good to make your first layer a little taller, i wonder if that is still true.?

i never adjusted layer width, that should be default still.

This is my displacement photo.
i have no special instructions for the first layer exempt that is should not be solid...

This happens at every object that I print with zero solid bottom layers

That infill is also smaller than the rest. There must be something different. How about uploading your .ini file for slic3r (the saved prefs) also which version of slic3r are you using?

Ok,
I need some help here.

I run Slic3r from a Macbook, where I installed it on the desktop.
I found some ini files as attached....

@Replace, as Sublime said the different spacing on first layer depends on first layer extrusion width, which is different (fatter) for first layer by default. You can just set it in the "Advanced" section in "Print Settings". If you set it to 0 (auto) it will be equal to the one used for the other layers.

@Sound:

Ok, I will try that,
but my first layer sais: 100% isn't that the same as zero ?

Hi Guys,

thanks for the advice, it was really the 100% first layer width

I did a test with the original parameter (top) and with that one to zero (bottom) . Now infill aligned :-)

100% in first layer width means layerwidth=layerheight which probably was not what you wanted.

On a similar thought thou. I wonder what the best way to add a honey come part to a part of a print is. So that I could make a part more complex and in 1 piece not 2 or more.

My first layers, when solid, also are smoother now.
They somehow often clogged a bit, probably due to to much etrusion.
