Can Slic3r write G-code for a CNC Mill?
October 26, 2015 04:54PM
Scope of Project: I'm making an adaptable 3D print head for a CNC mill. Its fairly large, its a C.R. Onsrud 5-Axis CNC router, 2015 Model F146S15.

I'm fairly new to the hardware/software world. So these are my thoughts on how I think it might go. I'm hoping to get some questions answered.

Step 1: Currently, we make a 3D model in Inventor, then import it into AlphaCAM to write the G-code for our Onsrud machine. We have a post from Onsrud to convert the default G-code to the G-code specific for the Onsrud 5-Axis mill.
So my question is. Can this Slic3r program write G-code for a 3D print on a CNC machine? Specifically the Onsrud. and how would I go about doing that? Will I have to get a special post for the Slic3r program from Onsrud? I believe the Onsrud post can be used for any CAM writing software. Or w/e program to write G code.

This is my main concern right now. I'll post the other steps later
I just talked to my guy and when he gets a chance hes going to see if he can send us the post file.

If this can write the code for the machine, then I plan on using a separate stand alone controller to control the hot end temp of the 3d printer, the dispense (extruder on/off I think), etc.

Heres a link to a kickstarter video that is pretty much exactly what Id like to make but on a large scale. But for now, It can be as simple as this for proof of concept. Then after we can get it to work, we'll worry about how to upscale it.

Heres a link to some photos of the machine.

Im studying Mechanical Engineering at Oregon Institute of Technology and this is what I have chosen for my senior project. So I appreciate all the help.
