detect thin walls creates gaps

Can somebody explain to me the behaviour of the "detect thin walls" option shown in the attached image? Disabled, the thin walls around the wholes are sliced into two traces, which probably produces a wall too thick. As I understand it, the detect thin walls option should colapse the two traces into one, but what I get is a gap in the wall
