Dual Extruder Hand-Off

Would this be difficult to implement in firmware? It would be simple to add a filament-out detector to an extruder. Just run the filament over a limit switch so that when the filament runs out, the switch is released. When Extruder 1 runs out of filament, Extruder 2 takes over and finishes the print. This would be a good way to use those spools that still have a decent amount of filament, but maybe not enough to finish a print. It would also be handy for large prints using filament that comes in smaller spools like Colorfabb and Taulman.

Interesting idea.

0.92.3 has a jam/out of filament detector. Not exactly a simple switch as it needs changing signals while extruding. That feature has currently 3 possible reactions selectable (filament change or pause). Would be easy to extend this to a filament source switch. Only question is if it is that usefull if we can already change the filament when it runs out. I see dual extruder more for using different filaments in one print. Anyhow, it would be a possible addition. Only you have to decide on behaviour at compile time. But maybe that should also be selectable in a future version.
