Issue with height of first layer

This is probably a simple question but the Repetier configuration.h file is still mostly gibberish to me. Lol.

I've leveled the print bed and when I home the z-axis it's at just the right height above the print bed. However, when I print the first layer, the extruder nozzle rises slightly off the bed surface (maybe 1mm or less). This is causing some prints to detach from the bed surface during printing.

At first I thought it was a setting in Cura so I tried Slic3r and had the same exact results. This is what makes me think it's a setting in the firmware.

Any advice?

This is an slider problem.
Check the value of the height of the first layer in cura or slic3r.
Your are sliding with what layer height?

I'm using a layer height of 0.2 mm.

look at the Printer Settings found in the Config under Slicer for a specific setting called Z offset and make it zero otherwise it will either raise or lower nozzle the amount in Z offset which can be a positive or negative value. It is a software adjustment for Z axis height to fine tune it.
