X Y resolution - 8 micron details

I decided to do some tests to see what Tantillus's actual X Y resolution. To do so I made a 20 x 20 x 10mm cube and embossed number into the side of it. 8, 16, 32 and 64 each number is inset into the surface by its value in microns. So 8 microns for the 8 and 16 microns for the 16 and so on. I chose 8, 16, 32, 64 because they are Tantillus's theoretical resolution at 16x 8x 4x 2x microstepping so I figured they would be a good bench mark of whether microstepping actually gives higher positional accuracy.

I then sliced it with Kisslicer 1.1.0 pre-beta with a single wall 0.5mm wide and 150micron layers at 45mm/s with a minimum layer time of 0 seconds to prevent it from slowing down. No retraction.

This is the second oldest Tantillus and it still has all of its original gears and printed bushings. It even has printed bushings on Z. If you listen to the video you will hear that the gears make a little noise because they have worn a little and have a very small amount of backlash. Clearly this is less than the depth of all the imprints as you will see.

I was amazed to see that all of the depths are visible and legible. Although at these depths faint.




To be clear these are 0.008mm 0.016mm 0.032mm and 0.064mm deep embossing's on a 20mm block.

... can you see a difference between 0.008 and 0.016?

It seems the difference from 0 to 0.008 is a visible difference (mybe more by slowdown at the edges than inset?), and from 0.032 to 0.064 too ... but not between the smalles steps confused smiley

You can feel them all and they are all inset into the face. I tried to caliper them but they are not precise enough to measure the difference since you can effect it that much just by pushing a little. I will try and take some pictures under the microscope and post them soon.

Holy shit that's cool, I've never attempted to emboss my prints by such a small distance but it's awesome to see the level of detail one can expect. I would have expected the edges to blur but they are fairly defined for such a small inset.

Gorgeous and consistent layers btw, excellent printer.

I had a go at Richraps challenge to print Emmets secret heart box at 50% scale in the tiny printing competition. Be sure to check it out. [forums.reprap.org] Richrap has printed lots of tiny stuff on his Tantillus and others have printed some really really tiny stuff on other printers too.

After some more thoughts, I think I got itsmiling smiley
Here is my calculation:
  • Tantillus use 5/16" rods to wrap the wires, it's circumference is:
    π × diameter = 3.14159265359 x 7.9375 = 24.9363916879 mm
  • Tantillus's motor produce 1.8° of turn for 1 step, 200 steps for 360°, 3200 steps for 360° after 16x microstepping.
  • Which means 1 single step move the X or Y axis 24.9363916879 / 3200 = 0.0077926224, which roughly equals to 8 microns.
