Sourcing Tantillus Parts

Dear Tantillus,
I am super excited after seeing your printer and am eager to get started in building one. I was having trouble sourcing some parts though. First of all - the hex nuts. I have been looking on McMaster-Carr and I see that (for the 10-32) each hex nut is $2.63 (http://bit.ly/1bTl0Ml) !! So after doing some peeking, I have found that there are also left hand-threaded hex nuts at 25 for $11.06 (http://bit.ly/1dXhXm6) , some plastic hex nuts @ 100 for $5.78 (http://bit.ly/MQ4Uh1) and some machine nuts @ 100 for 1.78 (http://bit.ly/1lvYkLM) in zinc or 100 for $3.98 (http://bit.ly/1fA9aeB) in aluminum. What would be recommended?

Second, I couldn’t find 1/4"-20 Flat washers on McMaster-Carr because I didn’t know size, Inner Diameter, and Outer Diameter (http://bit.ly/Lq2rbJ) .

Third, I was having trouble finding cheap bearings. McMaster-Carr has them for $4.53 (http://bit.ly/LpVNlH) apiece but Ultimachine has them for much less (https://ultimachine.com/content/608zz-bearing) . Will the ultimachine ones work?

I couldn’t find LM8uu bearings on McMaster-Carr either but I found these (http://www.amazon.com/6pcs-LM8UU-Linear-Bearing-Bushing/dp/B008RIKN7W) on amazon.
I simply couldn’t find the LM8suu bearings anywhere except ebay. Where could I find these?

Also what would Drill Rods be called on McMaster-Carr? I’m really confused????

Tubing and springs were also confusing. I couldn’t find anything that wasn’t imperial so I couldn’t get the stuff that was supposed to be metric. I found some tubing (http://bit.ly/1fIBz1u) but I wasn’t sure if it was right.
Is this (http://www.mcmaster.com/#5041k69/=qjgucc) the right aquarium tubing? Are the inner and outer diameters right?

Would these (http://www.amazon.com/Black-Zip-Tie-100-Bag/dp/B0001IMMJI) zipties work?

For all of the electronics, frankly I’m open to suggestions. Whatever doesn’t break the bank but is still good.

Finally, I made a table with the BOM and some links etc. When I get the answers above, I will do update this BOM. How are the part prices? Is the BOM right?
Here is that table: [docs.google.com]

Thanks for everything and sorry for the extra long post.
Thanks,
Lucas

PS - I drafted this whole thing in google docs with everything directly linked but it didn't copy into the forum so I had to manually add the links winking smiley

Here's the spreadsheet I put together. Hopefully most of the links still work.

I assume you are in the US based on the suppliers you are trying to use. The original machines were built using: Homedepot, Fastenal, a pet store and eBay.

Where did the acrylic parts come from? Is this everything? Also, are there any everything-except-printed-parts-kits?

If I were to use these stores, would I be able to find everything? How much would it cost? I already have a 3D printer so don't include the printed parts.

Where did the acrylic parts come from?

Laser cutting shop, hacker space, friend, jigsaw, print the case.

Is this everything?

Don't know. As a rule I do not check over other peoples parts lists.

Also, are there any everything-except-printed-parts-kits?

Not that I know of.

Flemming, did everything work? It seems as if some of your parts are from "not so reputable" sellers in China? Was everything fine and does your bot work?

Everything worked fine, but you want to be sure and buy extra bearings because there is no quality control. I had a number of bearings that didn't spin freely or at all for that matter. But since they were so cheap it was still cost effective to just buy more than I needed.

Sounds great!! I have actually modified your spreadsheet to work with the Tantillus Printed version but I had a couple questions.
To flemming - what is Sheet3 on your spreadsheet? I was wondering if these were actually needed or of some help on the build?

Thanks,
Lucas

That was just me keeping notes of links when I was shopping around for various bits. A lot of that is from when I thought I was being clever by putting molex type connectors on the motors so that I could easily reuse them in the future. That was a dumb idea... I spent a whole lot of time fighting with poorly crimped pins and flaky connections. In the end I went back and soldered everything together.

A few other things:

- You might also want some 1/16" heat shrink tubing for the motor wires if you plan on soldering onto the tails.
- The ribbon cable I bought for the LCD was a whole lot smaller than what Sublime originally used. It made soldering those connections a bit more painful.
- The 4 pin connectors I used for the LCD and encoder were a little too fat to plug side-by-side on the RAMPs board so I had to sand a bit of the plastic off to squeeze them on. A thinner housing might solve that problem.

To Flemming again,
did everything work natively? The power supply? The motors? Did you have to modify anything?
Thanks,
Lucas

Everything worked fine once all the various bits were fine tuned. The only unique things I recall are: I only used one trim pot on the LCD for brightness because the contrast one never seemed to work right, I added an extra washer to the bottom of the extruder between the bearing and the gear, and the fans need to have a resistor and capacitor wired inline so that they work properly with the PWM signal coming from the RAMPs board. I also think my parts list is missing the power connector socket since I just rigged something together.
