pitted drill rod

Due to the high humidity while I was living in Florida, the rods on my Tantillus have pitted. What's the best way to smooth them again. I don't want to ruin my printed bearings by operating it in it's present state.

Thanks,

Dave

If it's just minor I would use a scotch bright pad. If it is to severe that that does not take it out I would then try some emery cloth.

If you don't fear disassembling them, putting steel into hot (almost or gently cooking) water for a few hours gets rid of any rust. The brown stuff will be replaced by black stuff and can be wiped off. It's a very old recipe for blueing.
