This is our part from RepRapBcn. A lot of work this week so we couldn't dedicate enought time to improve it.

It is printed at 0.15mm layer height with our miniextruder.
Temperatures of 174ºC at the first layer and 170 at the rest for the extruder.
Temperatures of 60ºC at the hot bed during all the print time.
It was printed in an actual time of 1h 38m.

I had one last go (and made a timelapse of it!)

Printed in 36 minutes and wasn't too bad! Some of the ambitious overhangs
curled a bit and the head caught some of them causing a good proportion
of the stringing.

Any tips or hints to help reduce the bobbling on the overhang sections would be appreciated!

The bridging at the top was a bit ropey too but managed to complete. It
struggled potentially because of the thick 0.3mm layering.

There are two fans. The one in the front that cools the cold end, but some air does make it down to the part. The second fan sits right behind the heater block and points down. It's visible in the video. Both fans are 40mm.

This model is heavily influenced by min layer time. Increasing speeds is not going to significantly effect the build time because min layer time will just slow it back down.

Estimates for various min layer times and 20mm/s perimeters
20s = 1h45m
15s = 1h19m
10s = 54m
5s = 43m
0s = 43m

I finally got around to finding some time for my first competition entry after work today. Nice surprise to find a new version of Slic3r came out yesterday so this was sliced with v0.8.3.

Not too bad for a first attempt, just a little stringing which cleaned up nicely.
Completed in 34:30 on my eMaker Huxley.
1.75mm ABS filament
0.3 mm layers from a 0.5 nozzle, automatic extrusion width.
Print speed: loops 30, small loops 24, infill 30, other 24.
1.8mm retraction at 30 mm/s
2 perimeters, 2 solid layers, 0.3 fill density.
Printed at 210 C.
Cooling with side mounted fan @ 60% after first 10 layers.

richgain. Can you post another picture from the side?

Here's my 'ugly baby' entry! smiling smiley

It was sliced in Slic3r 0.8.2 and printed on a Prusa Mendel. 1.75ish PLA.
; layer_height = 0.20
; perimeters = 2
; solid_layers = 2
; fill_density = 0
; nozzle_diameter = 0.35
; filament_diameter = 1.73
; extrusion_multiplier = .85
; perimeter_speed = 30
; infill_speed = 30
; travel_speed = 100
First few layers at 190 dropping to 182. I struggled to cool it as it printed due to the cooling robbing heat from hot end. I've since insulated my hot-end a bit better and am reprinting.

I took a moment this evening to examine KISSlicer a bit more closely and am currently reprinting the Lightbulb using KISSlicer to generate the gcode. If it doesn't fall over I'll post the result also!

Great fun! Challenging print.

Epic fail! Here's the result anyway! KISSlicer seemed to be doing better all the way to the top. I left it unattended and when I returned the nozzle had stuck and ripped it clean off it's base! oh well... at least I learned quit a bit about KISSlicer in the process.

Enough for now.

I'm not exactly sure when the competition is supposed to close considering time zones, but I'll call it soon after I get up in the morning.

My pleasure, here's one from the side.

Good Job, that's a very nice print.

This week the competition is judged on quality vs print time. Quality is completely subjective, but I tried to be technical about it.

If the competition was judged solely on quality I think rhysjones would win it with a very clean print. The print was at 0.2mm layers with a build time of 70m.

When I factor in print time I think these are the three standouts.

richrap with 0.2mm layers in 39m30s
benosteen with 0.3mm layers in 36m19s
richgain with 0.3mm layers in 34m30s

richrap's print is very fast for 0.2mm layers, but I think the 0.3mm prints were actually a little bit better quality in less build time.

benosteen added a bunch of extra content that I though was useful and in the spirit of the competition. I really wanted to award extra points for that, but I didn't spell that out at the beginning.

It came down to opening up the two prints side-by-side and the winner is.. richgain!

Congratualtions richgain!!!! A very nice print indeed!

Thanks Billy for your vote of confidence. And thank you Rhys. I really thought you had that in the bag!

I read the news on my iPhone, just as I was about to fall asleep ... and now I'm wide awake again, thinking about what to set as next week's competition.

I've had a good day today, with the Apparently Impossible Cube reaching the top spot (briefly) in Popular Things on Thingiverse and a new invention of mine finally seeing the light of day. I haven't published the design yet but as a little teaser, I can tell you that it's a very useful little item that takes just 20 cm of 1.75 mm filament to print.

I did think about using this for next week's challenge, to see who could come up with the most interesting print using the least amount of plastic but abandoned this idea for two good reasons. Firstly, this isn't really supposed to be a design competition, and secondly, with the different combinations of filament size and nozzle diameter it could end up being a mathematical nightmare to judge (and I haven't seen nophead on here yet).

So, in conclusion, look out for a new thread in the morning when I'll set out the next challenge.
Now back to sleep!

Congratualtions richgain, That is a very good print, and nice to see it done on a Huxley.

Is the Mendel90 printing that well yet?

The Mendel90 is going very well and I love it. I'm just waiting on some more filament to give me more choice of colours. Definitely recommended as a good solid machine though.
I've applied for a table at the Manchester Mini-Maker Faire in July and, if we get one, nophead and I will be demonstrating Mendel90s and the Huxley with lots of live printing.

That's excellent news, I hope you get a space and it all goes well.

Congratulations smiling smiley I've only just thought to come back and check this thread (lost notifications for some reason!)

And finger's crossed for the Makerfaire application - I hope you get it, Richgain! I'm unable to go this year, but it's normally a great event smiling smiley

Hello All,

I know this is an old thread, but I'd like to try and print this model on my new Fisher Delta machine. Unfortunately, the Thingiverse link gives a 404. Does anyone have the STL they would be willing to share with me please?

Many thanks,
Jean-Marc.

Hello Bob,

Thanks for the link, but that one is different. The competition model has double the number of spirals.

Open the given example in (e.g.) FreeCAD, mirror, and union. You'll have something very close to what you want.

Thank you for your advice, but I was hoping to print the exact same model so I could compare the print quality with the examples in this thread.
