Parametric Sculpture / Aug 15 to Aug 21 - 2012

This sculpture is similar to the Voronoi but the features are larger and easier to print with a larger nozzle, hopefully it will inspire more people to enter the competition smiling smiley ... and no the flower is not printed winking smiley. it's just to show that you can use this as a weed pot or pencil holder or whatever.

So the winner gets a little reward for their efforts I am adding in a small prize of an Eckertech hobbed bolt kit (standard mailing included).

Finally getting decent prints out of my printer so I thought I'd give this a shot. Everything was looking great until I got to the top and my fan wasn't blowing on the print surface anymore... Also I slowed the print down to 60% for the last 50 layers.

Settings: J-Head .5mm Hot end, Marlin Firmware, Repetier Host and Slic3r 0.9.1

Here's my entry. Probably one of the nicest prints I've done. Printed on my over-sized MendelMax printer.
0.4mm J-Head, Marlin, Repetier, and Slic3r 0.9.1.

Printed with the excellent PLA from Diamond Age Solutions, via Printbl.

BTW, these images are straight from the printer. Zero cleanup.

My entry printed on my prusa/ecksbot mix-up. Printed with purple PLA from ultimachine using 0.35mm nozzle and sliced with kisslicer at 0.17mm layer heights.

A bit late for the contest, but I enjoyed making this so thought I'd share it anyway.
Printed in yellow PLA from Faberdashery on the Mendel90. A bit of fine stringing still needs cleaning up but mostly quite presentable.

I'd really like to see these contests continue. It seems that participation is severely dropping. Is there anything we can do to promote this sub-forum?

Oh crap!!! I forgot! My bad.... Sorry. I've been really busy.

Although there were few entrants there was a good representation of machine variations. The sample was printed on a modified Sells Mendel. The entries were printed on an SAE Prusa, an over sized MendelMax, a Prusa / ecksbot mix up...?, and a Mendel 90. The nozzle sizes went from .35 to .5.

The improvement in the abilities of RepRap machines over the past couple of years is simply amazing, you all did a very good job.
I am now realizing that the hardest part of winning a competition is having to judge the next one. It would have been a whole lot easier had I based the competition a specific aspect of printing.

As far as I can tell best retraction has to go to djamwolfe (although your picture sizes were a bit small) did seem to do the best job, I couldn't find any stringing in the print at all....... and then of course, the top happened..... bummer.

The overall quality of the print seems pretty much a coin toss between New Perfection and Gulf. Maybe it's the angle or maybe it's the lighting but New Perfections perimeters seem to be vertically a little more consistent, however Gulf seems to have done a little better job of bridging the holes, once again, maybe it's the angle and the layer adhesion seemed a little better. I called the guys in for reinforcements, but the jury is hung. It's a tie!...Argh.

So, unless you two can conspire on posting the next competition, I am going to have to rely on the womens vote to decide the winner. They both chose Gulf, because they liked the colour better. In either case you can both claim your prize by entering your mailing information in the contact us form at Eckertech.com

Gulf can take on the next competition, if he doesn't come back soon to do it I will take over.

Thank you to the women. I was comparing mine to NewPerfections's print and I also couldn't tell who managed to print a better sculpture, so awesome job NewPerfection.
I will post next weeks contest tomorrow, NewPerfection feel free to PM me with ideas I have a few but let me know if you have any.
Thank you Bruce

I know it's a bit late, I just couldn't find the time to post this before.

That's some nice "lilac pearl" PLA from diamond age.

As you can see on the top overhangs, I lacked a fan at the time of that print.

Most of my technical comments should be correct, but is THIS one ?
Anyway, as a rule of thumb, always double check what people write.
