What do you use to edit the start and end gcode in the Skeinforge folder that came with the printer?

Any plain text editor.

I use Notepad++
You can setup your own styles so the commands can be coloured based on content.

Ok thanks.

I have been reading about being able to change layers in the gcode. Being able to make some layers solid and others not, is this possible and what software would I need?

It is done by slicing the model twice, once with solid infill and once with sparse. You then use a text editor to cut and paste some layers from one file and others from the other. I don't know of any software that would help doing that other than Repetier host which is good for identifying where a line of gcode is on the model.

It would be quite easy to write a program that allowed each layer to come from one of n files with a nice graphical display of the result.
