I've been contacting various filament suppliers trying to find someone that will sell me 2.3Kg of PLA on a 300 x 85mm spool that will sit on my Mendel90 Spool holders!
Currently my filament sits in a coil flat on the table behind my printer and has to be "unrolled" as the filament is used otherwise the filament twists and breaks off...
Really need a spool but no luck in locating one so far? Has anyone else got hold of one and if so where?

What about making a non-spooled filament holder, like what lulzbot ships with the AO-101?

My Mendel90 kit is on order and I've had some concerns about the spool holder too.

The filament from GRRF.DE comes on a spool which fits the Mendel90 dibond kits.
You failed to say where in the world you are located as this may well make a difference to the value of the responses you get to your question.
Saying that, a mentioned above, there are several viable alternatives - take a look around this forum and on Thingiverse I counted 4 different designs.

I have a stack of them people can have free, but shipping will be expensive. I get them with filament from reprapsource.com and empty one for every four kits I produce. Before that a friend gave me some empty welding rod spools, which are the same size.

@nophead Really cheeky I know, but any chance I can have an empty spool with the kit I've just ordered? Unless its already packaged up/left/etc...
(like a kid in a sweet shop waiting for the kit.....big grin thinking about it, sad but true)

It has already gone and the spools don't fit in the kit boxes. Have you not had a tracking number from the company?
We have three boxes that we can recycle that will hold two each, shipping to the UK will be £10.19, boxes and spools free.

Ahh ok, no problem. It'll be a while before it finished so I'll hold off for the moment if ok, as I'm not sure how the filament I've already ordered will come, therefore I may take you up on your kind offer in a few days if still available.
Yes I have had a tracking number but it didn't mention who or where it was from only the delivery company name. I was wondering if it could be the kit! You've just made today start to go really slowly and I'm very upset I haven't taken next week off work.

I have the same problem actually, my pla comes without a spool and I have no idea where to mount a printed spool, and which printed spool would actually fit nicely on the mendel90.

I think I'm going to modify your mounts to span more of the gap, and start printing my own 180mm spools. I managed to vary the width of the existing brackets with a few new bolts in order to fit a common power cord reel. But the reel itself costs $7 USD, so it's not much of a bargain.
