GT2 Belt STL's, need help.

GT2 Belt STL's, need help.
April 18, 2013 09:19PM
I'm trying to build a Mendel90 using GT2 Belt.
I've tried compiling the model but seem to have similar problems to this guy
[forums.reprap.org]

Is there anyone out there willing to compile it for me until I work out how to, or give me some pointers?

The parts that are effected by the belt pitch seem to be -
x_belt_grip.stl
x_carriage.stl
y_belt_anchor_toothed.stl
y_belt_clip_toothed.stl

The parameters that would go into "belt.scad" would be
GT2 =[2.0, 6, 1.33];

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Does the solution in the other thread not work? I.e.

python make_machine.py mendel

It is simply caused by an incorrect file association for .py that does not pass the parameters. The open action for .py should be "C:\Python27\python.exe" "%1" %*

Not sure why it gets set up wrong on some people's machines.

Changing the belt and pulleys will also also affect the Y bar clamps slightly as they align the bars with the belt centre.

Ha my pathing was fine but I was trying to use python 3!
Maybe putting a python version in the readme (like with openSCAD) would be good for idiots like me.
Using the wrong python version returns the same sort of error as the other thread, but "python" doesn't work of course.

Yes, unfortunately Python 3 is a different language to Python 2.x and I don't know anybody who uses it. Seems like a lot of things were made less convenient for no good reason. For example they got rid of the print statement and made it a function. It should have been called something different.

I just short sightedly thought hey I'll get the latest and greatest.
Working well now.
Cheers for the help, It's great to see someone so involved in the community.

Did you also make an update for GT2 pulleys as well as the belt? - they're defined in pullies.scad but I'm not sure what the numbers should be.

Hey Lenbok.
Yep I added some 20 tooth GT2 pulleys in as well.

I wasn't 100% sure what some of the parameters were for though.

function pulley_screw_length(type) = type[10];
function pulley_screw_z(type) = type[11];
function pulley_offset(type) = type[12];
function pulley_nut_y(type) = type[13];

I assume offset is how far the pulley is offset from the motor body.

BTW you should make a pull request containing the information for the GT2 belts and pullies so nophead can integrate them into the main repository. I am sure it will be useful to plenty of other people.

I would like to use the gt2 as well as I already have the belt and pulley.
What exactly do I need to change to make that work?

Hope someone can explain it in a bit more detail.

Thanks!!

Hi EMC75. I'd be happy to help now that I've got a vague idea of what I'm doing.
Give me a bit more info on what you're stuck on and how much you know about openscad/python so that I know how much detail to go into.

Hi isolt,

I am very new to this and have openscad but that is all I have done. I have all the materials for the mendel90 and the gt2 belt but not the t2.5 which is why I would like to use that instead.
I'm having someone else print the parts for me so if you can run me through the process of what I need to do to change the STLs for GT2 And which ones to change I would very much appreciate it.

Thank you!

OK you'll need to download the SCAD files to start with
SCAD
Then you'll need to edit the files in the Mendel90-master\scad\vitamins
You'll need to add entries for new GT2 belts and pulleys in the relevant files.

Then make a new "dibondGT2_config.scad" by copying and renaming the dibond one.
Then edit new file to reference your new GT2 entries.
Then compile it as it says in the read me, you'll need python 2.
Tell me how you go and if you get stuck.

Cheers

I'll give it a try tomorrow morning.
If not I will be traveling for 2 days and will get back to you.

Thanks!

I changed file for the GT2 belt but not sure what I need to put in for a GT2 20 tooth pulley.

If anyone has the stl files that are different for the GT2 belt and a GT2 20 tooth pulley that would work as well.

I believe these are all the parts that change with GT2, I haven't printed and tested them yet though.

I am also going to build a Mendel90 using GT2 Belt and aluminium Pulley's I got with a complete kit set Ramps 1.4

Could you please confirm that the stl's you gave above(GT2.zip (207.5 Kcool smiley worked with your GT2 belt on your mendel90 ?

Thanks a lot

Hi koumac.
Sorry I haven't been able to get all the parts printed yet so I can't confirm. Maybe EMC75 could tell you?

Sorry for the late reply.

The stl's for the GT2 worked perfect for me and my Mendel90 has been printing for a while now.
I'm ready to try and build another model smiling smiley

Good to hear.
I've only just got around to assembling mine and it seems to work as well, so good news all around!
