RyanMark's Calibrated & Tuned Skeinforge Profiles - Including 0.1mm & 0.05mm
March 01, 2014 06:49PM
After almost a year of printing, I thought I would give back to the community and provide my Calibrated & Tuned Skeinforge Profiles for the Mendel90 kit. The profiles include 2 smaller layer heights of 0.1 mm & 0.05mm.

Additional pictures of prints using the profiles can be found at the below link: (with the exception of the 0.25mm profile)

Difference from Nopheads Profiles
- Jitter is turned off (I find this provides a nicer looking finish)
- Infill in direction of Bridge is turned off (If you are printing bridges this should be turned back on but generally keep this off as it adds unnecessary 100% fill layers)
- end.gcode has the fan turned on after the print finishes and is homing Z. After Z has homed the fan is turned off. (Cools hotend quicker)
- Retraction settings are increased for the higher layer heights and decreased for the lower layer heights. (Ranges from 0.5mm to 1.5mm) This ensures the Z seam is less noticable for the higher layers and ensures the z seam is connected for the lower layer heights.
- For every profile except the 0.25mm and 0.3mm heights the bottom layer will be 0.3mm to ensure the first layer adheres properly (this is also helpful if your bed isn't 100% level). This will increase the overall height of the prints slightly by 0.3mm-layer height.
- For the 0.1mm and 0.05mm profiles travel speed has been reduced
-The lower the layer height the more top/bottom layers are needed from 3 (0.3mm) to 15 (0.05mm).

Instruction
- Copy profiles into the .skeinforge extrusion profile (C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\.skeinforge\profiles\extrusion)
- Copy start and end gcode into the .skeinforge alterations (C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\.skeinforge\alterations)
- Print a calibration 20mm Cube to test profile before printing a larger print (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2064)

Here are the perimeter flow rates, W, H, & W/H ratios for each profile.

H W W/H Perimeter Flow Rate
0.3000 0.4500 1.5000 0.8567
0.2500 0.4125 1.6500 0.8697
0.2000 0.4100 2.0500 0.8951
0.1000 0.4000 4.0000 0.9463
0.0500 0.4000 8.0000 0.9731

thanks for sharing! I'm going to have to try your 0.05mm layer height. Every once in a while I try to run a print at that resolution, but haven't been successful yet.

One question, which Jhead are you using? The 0.35 or the 0.40mm? Since the extrusion width would only be accurate if I have the same extruder size as you. (Crossing my fingers you have a 0.35mm like me)

The settings are for a 0.4mm Jhead.

I will maybe upload a 0.05mm profile for a 0.35mm Jhead later in the week but I can't verify it will work.

Attached are the two lower layer height settings calibrated for a 0.35mm nozzle. I can't test these as I don't have that size of nozzle but I am fairly confident they should work. Make sure you use a calibration cube as a test.

Note:
-The bottom layer is set to a layer height of 0.25mm because of the smaller nozzle size
- Most other points referenced for the previous settings are applied.

If you try them out I would appreciate seeing a picture.

Cheers,

One thing I find when using Faberdashery PLA with layer heights of 0.1 and 0.05mm is the wall going very rough sometimes, and also the filament going a bit "feathery", with the filament not coming out evenly it would seem. I am presuming this is down to the fact that it is pushing less filament than at higher layer heights. Have you ever had that? I have tried slowing perimeters right down but it still seems to do it. Also on the 0.05mm layers I notice the roughness happening a lot on the corners.

Hi,

thank you very much for the profiles. Here are my testcubes:

@ probonic, yes I did notice the 0.05mm is a bit rougher then the other layer heights and I would guess when the filament is pushed out at such a small flow rate small deviations in the filament cause the roughness but I could be wrong. Printing the infill at higher layer heights and the perimeters at lower layer heights would help with this but Skeinforge doesn't have that capability. With the 0.1mm height I didn't notice any roughness.

@ bastard (I feel bad typing your user name) Thanks for testing them out. The first few layers look a little rough but the rest of the cube looks good.

Never mind - I'm the bastard operator from hell (you know the stories?) - so my users name me sometimes ... ;-))

I've got a fan speed noise problem: Do you get a high pitch sound from the fan? I'm getting M106 S200 in my gcode files.

Try to use M106, only.. not S200..
I guess S200 will try to spin the fan at 200rpm.

RyanMark, is your .2 and .3mm settings the same as Nophead's? Or are they your own variation?

Nevermind...

I see that they are your own variations. I had interest in printing at .1mm a long time ago--I'm going to try your template and see how it compares to what I came up with... hopefully it's better than mine!

@BSBMX - If you wouldn't mind posting some pictures if you end up using the profiles, that would be swell.

I first tested your .1mm profile, and I have to say I'm impressed. I wanted to print something with detail instead of a block, so I chose this squirrel: [www.thingiverse.com]

The ears were a little droopy because of the hot end hovering around the small area for so long (this goes away if I print multiple parts or change the cool settings), but other than that, I'm pretty happy with it. I'm next going to try your .2mm profile and see how it stacks up compared to what I've been printing.

Your squirrel looks really good, I am glad the profiles worked for you. Thanks for sharing.

- For every profile except the 0.25mm and 0.3mm heights the bottom layer will be 0.3mm to ensure the first layer adheres properly (this is also helpful if your bed isn't 100% level). This will increase the overall height of the prints slightly by 0.3mm-layer height.

I like my prints to be dimensional correct.. How can i remove this in the settings?

You will need to change the height over layer thickness in the bottom tab [fabmetheus.crsndoo.com]

You will need to change the the object first layer settings in the speed tab [fabmetheus.crsndoo.com]
