For the love of god can someone do an article, or series of articles on skeinforge? From the basics to advanced usage. That would be #1 on my list.

If someone were to write an article and submit it to you, will it at least be considered for inclusion in an issue?

... short answer - yes! grinning smiley

This RepRap-magazine should be a platform for the community with varying themes and sections, that will be selected by interest and/or common sense ...

Great issue! Over in our solidoodle forums we have been discussing a different Z-wobble issue that was not covered in your 4 page article on the situaiton. One of our members has developed a firmware modification that allows us to compensate for our banding and get amazing prints.

Soliforum: Z-wobble compensation discussion
Solidoodle Wiki: Z Wobble Calibration
Solidoodle Wiki: Banding

Looking forward to future issues!

Congratulations on issue 1. Very professional and lots of content and images.

My highlights were the interview with Adrian Bowyer and information about new developments such as resin printers.

I hope this will encourage others to submit articles for publication.

I was a little disappointed when I opened my copy that you had failed to include a free toy.....not to be put off though I printed my own!

I have however kept a copy of issue 1 as I know in future that first editions are always worth something.

Please don't email me asking for a copy of my first edition though as this will just devalue my own.

I am looking forward to issue 2. Will this be in 3D? If so can you make sure you supply the 3D glasses or at the very least a link to the model!

That's a really interesting development, I get similar Z banding. I'm still trying to get my head around what causes the error, I think they are saying it is due to inaccurate pitch on the threaded rod?

A software mod would be a cheaper fix than fitting leadscrews.

bobc,

it pretty much solved my banding issues altogether.

Guys - excellent articles, and I particularly enjoyed the on Z-Axis wobble and the various slicers.

Please note, however, that the problem that Rich experienced with KISS on the stretchlet was due to his configuration....

Hello everyone,

I've attached a steps calculator to help with finding good layer heights as outlined in Z-artifact article.

I love the magazine. I am really surprised by the high quality of the articles.

I think I noticed two typos though. Page 13, right column, someone forgot to put the question in the gray italic font. Page 36, left column, ping-ping instead of ping-pong.

I am really looking forward to the next issue.

Hi guys

We are very glad that the magazine is getting so many good comments and feedback!

The advices and suggestions already made will be taken under consideration during the development of the project, and always feel free to send us an email.

As for the first edition, well we missed some typos..our apologies. We have reviewed some that were mentioned and made the pdfs already available for download. We will do this again if more are spotted.

We have also received some photos sharing and some article suggestions, and we are currently defining the content for issue 2. So if someone is considering submitting content for issue 2 now is a good time for a first contact (but you can do it anytime).

Cheers,
Paulo

what are the article submission guidelines?

do you want things written in latex/tex/office/pagestream/wordstar/pdf ?? how do you want article source to be submitted?

We are doing a how to/guidelines that will be publish in issue 2, but for now a simple word document is fine.

+1 to a donate button on the mag page. Seems plenty of people would love to give a little.
Re: RepRap magazine: issue #1 - Z banding
March 04, 2013 03:23PM
The article on z-banding artifacts got me to do some investigation.
I'm using a Printrbot Plus, which has smooth rods to constrain the direction of motion on the z-axis, so "wobble" is not an issue.
The article says that only true full steps of the stepper motor are repeatable and accurate. But in my experience with the Printrbot and Kysan motors, microstepping seems to work just fine. This eases up the problem considerably.

So, what are we looking for on the Z axis?
A) Perfect calibration (a 100mm tall object is exactly 100mm tall)
cool smiley No Banding due to roundoff errors (i.e. we want all layers to have the same number of steps or microsteps)
C) The ability to select specific layer heights.

Well, we can have any two out of three.

I'm using 18 turns/inch brass rod. I have chosen to allow a 0.3% error in Calibration. Instead of 2267.72... microsteps per millimeter I'm using 2260. This allows me to choose "rational" layer heights in increments of 0.05mm and get layers which are an integral number of microsteps per layer.

Not everyone fully agrees; there's a lively forum topic in the Printrbottalk pages.
