How to generate extruded 3D model from images

Hi all,

Recently, I used free tools, such as OpenSCAD, Inkscape, and GIMP to extrude an image into a 3D model, for patterns I wanted to model. In this case, it was a leaf vein pattern from an image of a leaf. I wrote up a quick guide on how to do it.

Enjoy! I plan on writing more OpenSCAD stuff. Are there other topics you'd like to see written about?

I'm just getting my first printer in a couple of weeks, so deep-diving into this sort of stuff before it arrives. Very useful techniques in there for bridging the gap between procedural OpenSCAD and more organic parts.

Thanks!

Currently printing on a MakerFarm Prusa i3. Curiously awaiting a PeachyPrinter.

Hi Will,

thanks for the nice tutorial.
I have grown fond of OpenScad but still a novice :-)
So I like any sharing initiatives very much
