Forum Webpage format request

For us lazy folks, would it be possible to put a second copy of the back to forum and back list of forums buttons on the bottom of each thread? Some of the posts (mine especially) can get quite long, and by the time I have waded through all that text, I don't want to have to wade back up again to get back to the top to click on the forum name again to look for the next thread I want to read. I guess in the same vain of laziness, a button on the top to jump to the bottom of the page, which is where new entries are most likely to be in threads I have read before would also be helpful. I am not sure how flexible this forum's software is, but if it is a small change, I for one would sure appreciate it.

Thanks in Advance!

Mike

I just use new tabs and my back button to navigate in that fashion.. the feature I'd like is a 'first unread post' link, instead of 'most recent post' on the thread list

And have the counterintuitive read-all that are already on the bottom on the top too?
And don´t log you out each time you close the tab?
And make the "unread messages" work? (I often open subforums that are not marked only to find lots of new entries while logged ib)
And actually link from the forum to the wiki+webpage+blog? (currently this is a oneway-route)
And make the email-notification work?(If your preferences say you want notifications you still have to check it each and every time you write a post.)
And make the thread-view work properly?
And give this 1980th style forum at least the same color-schema as wiki and blog?
And rename these rediculus forum-list and message-list links. It´s a thread-list and a subforum-list.
...or better yet use some state of the art forum-software like everyone else.
Some phpBB or burning board or something comes to mind. This one is obsolete
technology.

never seen a 'read all' link anywhere
I don't get logged out when I close a tab
unread messages work fine for me, but only in subforums I've visited before
I link back to forum from my blog posts where appropriate
email notifications work for me- I turned it off because unread messages works too
haven't really used thread view much, but it seemed to work when I tried it

I've tried this forum in numerous browsers (chrome, firefox, opera, konqueror, dillo) and all the above works for me in all of them.

It took weeks for me to find it too.
In the list of threads in a subforum it´s
at the bottom. In the list of subforums
it´s below the link and in the list of
messages of a thread it´s at the top.
...the joys of consistency.

You see the bug?

This is about the head and links FROM the forum
TO the RepRap wiki+the officiel project blogs
and other sites that belong to this project.
So new visitors finding this forum are not at a dead
end but can actually read the introduction, telling
them what this project is about.

> email notifications work for me- I turned it off

That´s the point. If does not check the checkbox
when it´s turned on. That it does not check he checkbox
when it´s turned off does not matter.

> because unread messages works too
I quote: "but only in subforums I've visited before"
It´s supposed to work all the time. If it only works
some of the times, it´s broken.

the unread messages thing seems to work on a subscription basis- ie only works in subforums I'm subscribed to. It means I don't get distracted by messages in groups I have no part in, like european local groups or delta/stewart robots.

That I can't find any method of accessing or altering this subscription list in the control panel is a bug in itself. I hope that fixing this would also provide me an option to default subscribe to new subforums or not.

I also link to wiki etc from my posts as appropriate, however I can't use wiki formatting which is what I suspect you may be referring to. this forum software has its own format, much like bbcode.

I agree that this forum software is clunky, but not as broken as you originally posited

How did you get this idea? Did you reat my post at all?
THE HEADER OF THE REPRAP FORUM SHOULD HAVE A LINK
TO THE REPRAP WIKI AND OFFICIAL REPRAP PROJECT BLOGS.
ONE LINK.
TO THE MAIN-PAGE.
THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CONTENT OF THE MESSAGES
DISPLAYED AND CAN NOT BE ALTERED BY USERS.
IT IS SUPPOSED TO HELP NEW VISITORS WHO KNOW NOTHING
ABOUT WHAT REPRAP IS FIND THE FORUM AND THE PAGES
THAT EXPLAINS WHAT REPRAP IS AND WHAT RESOURCES THIS
PROJECT OFFERED(download-site at sourceforge,
objects.reprap.org, dev.forums, mailing-list, builders blog,
SVN at sourceforge, ...).

Marcus, you're correct that the forum needs to display that stuff in a sidebar or topbar. I'll look at the other matters in this thread after I've had a chance to sleep.

Remember, you're all RepRap developers (once you've joined the super-secret developer mailing list), and the wiki, RepRap.org, [reprap.org] is for everyone and everything! grinning smiley
