This could just be be...

But I find animated smileys extremely annoying!!

Any chance you would consider disabling them, especially in topics ?

I too find them extremely annoying, especially that burning smiley.

I ended up using a browser addon plus a few lines of css to hide all smileys in topic lists. I leave smileys in messages since people use them indicating sarcasm etc, and use another addon to automatically pause all animated gifs on this site.
