confused smiley Z-probe/IR-sensor problem during setup
January 16, 2014 05:46PM
I have a problem setting up my printer (commissioning)

I can not home x nor Z
I get 0 out of the Z-probe (using G31).
For a short while I had a readout (app 500) just after flashing the firmware from 0.57 to 0.57a, and now nothing.
I doublecheccked (trible and more) wiring it all appears to be ok, and is untouched from the small moment it worked.
Any suggestions for troubleshooting ?

Context:
Ormerod: green
Firmware: 0.57a.
Axis moves (correct directions, homing Y is ok).
Pronterface will not connect unless I send "M555 P2" from Arduino first.
WWW not working at all (IP set to 192.168.11.113, gateway to 192.168.11.1 on private LAN).
Duet driven by PSU (jumper) but everything tested powered by PC with no change.

It looks like your configuration is not read at startup.

Can you try this command?

M558 P1 ; Turn Z Probe on

Edit:

Are you using the pre-packaged SD card?
That one is known to be unstable / unusable.

They advise you to throw that one in the trash...

Thanks a lot.

Yes that solved the problem right away.
But why ?
What else is not read at startup ?
What can I do ?

Sorry to place all my problems on your shoulders, but you nailed it in a remarkable short and precise way smiling smiley

If you are using the pre-packaged SD card,
you need to replace that one with a new one.

You need to copy the RepRapFirmware/SD-image folder contents
from the RepRapFirmware archive to the FAT32 formatted SD card.

You also need to edit your SD:/sys/config.g file,
this one contains the settings you are missing now.
Emulation mode, IP address, password etc.

The whole of config.g is not being read at startup. So this also includes the network settings, which explains why you can't connect over Ethernet. As 3D-ES says, ditch the SDHC card supplied and use a good one instead. I picked up a 4Gb Class 10 Maplin own brand one for about a fiver.

Thank you to both of you.
Will try when I can get hold of a new SD

Good night
Re: thumbs up Z-probe/IR-sensor problem during setup SOLVED

Update !

I´ve got a new 8Gb SD card.
Solved all my problems:
z-probe is working, so X-axis is easily homing, (I´m not satisfied with the reading being arround 250 for the Z-axis but it is working and the printer can function like this, there is work in progress for better probing).
Pronterface is working as should
Webinterface is working (only in chrome and only if do not try with other browsers first), I´m waiting for the updated webinterface as i see no use for the existing.

Thank you again for helping.

Please include working SD in the shiped products (or none).

On a sidenote:
I had a piece missing from my Ormerod (Z-not-trap), and is waiting for a new to arrive, lost patience (after e few hours, so no harm feelings ;-) and moddeled on by hand, after that i printed the axis calibration, and it was perfect, so I´ve printed the Z-nut-trap without even having on on my printer (the try spirit of RepRap), but I might not put in the new Z-nut-trap since my calibration is so good with the hand-modeled.

Ps. how do i mark a topic as solved ?

Excellent resourcefulness! Can we see a picture of your hacked z-nut-trap?

As I said in another thread, we're shipping Kingston 4GB SD Cards now, so hopefully no more problems in that department.

Naturally !
Here is a link of the remarkable handmade Z-nut-trap spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

I used some nameless polymer with a low melting point (it can be moddeled by hand at a not to warm temperature, you just need to be fast)
I then squeezed it in place to get the right positions of screews (stil hot/soft)
drilled the holes up (also by hand)
and put som bolts (3 pz) on threads, heated them with a lighter so i could insert (melt) them in place (not visible on picture)

I suppose you could make all parts this way, and have a very "wobbeling" RepRap, then start printing the same parts, aquracy would be pretty bad (but better than the handmade stuff), and after some itterations you would have a working machine like the one we got, anybody care for a challange grinning smiley

Neat! Looks quite in-line too. Polymorph, Sugru or maybe Oogoo? [www.instructables.com]

Absolutely fantastic.

ps. I suppose you will now ask me to pour it into the printer tongue sticking out smiley
