BE AWARE of External Drives moody smiley

There I was printing away...About 45 minutes in to a nice printing session. The printer was working from it's SD card, not USB.
In one of the other USB ports I had a card reader and I'd removed some files that I didn't want from a SD card.
I finished what I was doing so ejected the drive on the external device, and the printer stopped DEAD.
In future I'll know better.... Now I don't know if it's a problem with Windows 8.1, or the compiled version of Pronterface.
But I've noticed a clash before with my Samsung phone when that's been plugged in, but it's normaly a case of not being
able to Eject the Samsung phone.
Now Windows doesn't see the card in the Printer as a drive, so I'm guessing it's Pronterface that has the problem.
Just be aware when your printing. I won't use another device while printing in future....sad smiley

Ha! the exact same thing happened to me, I thought it was just me, glad I'm not alone. Sorry about your print though.

I had my iPhone plugged into the laptop using it for the internet. Halfway through a print I unplugged the phone and the print stopped.... (I didn't do it again)

Perhaps you should select 'Safely remove hardware' option in XP (or its equivalent in Win7 or 8), before pulling the plug

Hi Greg... It's called Eject (Drive) in later versions of Windows... And I did....
That's when it died...

Similar things happen on the mac too, adding/removing things on the USB bus seems to block momentarily the transfer on other ports - when you're printing from SD card and connected via USB, the ormerod burbles away to the host telling it what's up, and it expects the host to reply - this burbling gets interrupted and the print stops.

Perhaps surprisingly the cure for it is to tell the host to disconnect from the printer - it'll continue printing but won't then try to give the host a commentary, at this point you can unplug the printer from the PC (and if it's a laptop like mine, go out and enjoy the sun while checking your email), or add and remove as many external drives/gadgets as you like - if you need to change something in the print you can simply tell your host to reconnect, make any mods you want (eg temperature, pause the print etc) and carry on.

(We have Eject for removing a drive in Windoze 8.1..... )

Now that's interesting Ray... I might try that...
My understanding was that the printers micro got its power from the USB, so I could see what your saying working from a powered hub.

I was going to try powering the printers micro via the USB, and try using the network (I've never used it yet) to chat to it...

I might expertiment later.

Hi Kim, there's a pin header for a jumper on the board (JP9, also labelled 5V_EN ) that allows the 5V to be derived from the ATX 12V, using this will make the whole thing self-powered. There's another jumper, J10 that lets you derive the 5V from the ATX 5V line if you have that wired up - JP 9 is easier, though using 5V derived from the ATX psu will induce some noise on eg the probe sensor lines.

It might suit you to use JP9, since the duet will boot as soon as you power on the ATX (which means you won't have to wait for it to boot and look for ethernet when you plug it into the USB...)

Butting in,,,

I didn't know about J10, I have J9 set.

Can you explain the differences / benefits / drawbacks between J9 & J10 please?

Thanks
