chrome problems

I like using the Google Chrome interface but a week ago Chrome has just stopped working ...

you click the icon, the timer shows for a while but then nothing launches.

I've done a bit of forum research all over the internet and discovered I am
not the only one!

I have tried using system restore, this worked but only for an hour (I dont want to have to
keep on doing that)

all the mods / fixes people suggest I've tried but they dont help e.g.

I've tried changing some folder names in Chrome windows setting,
removing and re-installing,
removing and re-installing with the firewall off for the installation ...

I've got 3Gb of Ram and am using a XP SP3 machine

any one out there had the problem and fixed it?
Thank you
Jonathan

Sorry to hear you are having problems with Chrome. However, if you are using my fork of the firmware and web interface (see [forums.reprap.org]), it works with FireFox too.

One thing if you have not already tried is to blow away your whole profile so it starts from scratch. An uninstall does not do this and if anything is corrupt in there then that will persist. You will lose things like bookmarks if you haven't got those saved.

Make sure hidden folders are viewable in Explorer then go to C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\ where you may need to change the drive letter if not on C and you will need to substitute your {username}

Delete the default folder or move it if you want to try to recover anything from it.

Start up Chrome again. It should create a new clean Default profile.

Thanks for the tip of removing the default folder.

I tried this but no joy.
I tried removing the folder and just re-installing,
then I tried removing the folder, un-installing Chrome and then re-installing it again .... etc.
I tried everything I could think of.
It all seems to install 'ok' but wont actually launch.

I know that Chrome uses a lot of the PC resources so i am guessing my PC is just giveing up trying to launch it
its anoying that it there is no feedback / report to help problem solving.

Are you sure that your computer is not getting infected with a virus an hour or so after each time you use system restore? Now that MS has stopped issuing patches for XP, it is wide open to attack.

I did a SpyBot and proper Avast scan (not just the quick scan) on my computer (8 hours or so!)
... and you were quite right there were virus on the system.
Chrome now seems to work ok
Thank you
