How to start printing with ABS Ormerod 1

Hi
I have bought some ABS filament now.
and I want to start printing with that.
My printer is a Ormerod 1 with a few platic mods but all in PLA.

What parts do I need to replace with ABS first?

I imagine I need to replace the plastic parts closest to the hot end with ABS for it to be able to print ABS in the long run.
I assume someone must have done this already. Can the PLA parts take the heat needed to print the ABS replacement parts?

/Joni

Hi Joni,

When I start with ABS, one of my first part was the x-carriage in ABS

ReprapPro has a list here [reprappro.com] with a few other tips.

You might have trouble getting the heated bed upto a temperature that will work with ABS, but there are solutions such as insulating the bed while preheating. or increasing the supplied voltage from 12v to something higher, but you'd need to add some diodes to the 12v fans to prevent damaging them.

..What parts do I need to replace with ABS first?..

the part nearest the bed, fanduct parts, nozzle mount, x-runner, later you might want to change the x-idler-bracket and extruder parts

print the parts with a brim and they will stick to kapton tape nicely

the picture show johneato's Control air to the nozzles (drilled out the air outlets later for max airflow)

if any, the x-runner will be the first to fail, you can secure it to the bearing with a string of wire

..and keep the hotend up and away from the bed while heating up the bed
