Ormerod 2 printing problem
January 02, 2016 06:31AM
Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to 3D printing and only recently have I finally managed to solve all major issues I had with the ormerod 2 printer. I have managed to successfully print the snowman, but trying to print one of my own designs (volume knob) I see new problems arising. Looking at the picture you can see material missing from some areas and the curved area of the volume knob not being a curve really... I would say it's more of a mess :-(

I used slic3r default settings and also use the white PLA filament I got with the printer. If there's any experienced user that can suggest what the problem is or what parameters I need to change in slic3r I would greatly appreciate it because I don't really know where to start.

Below is the initialization code generated by slic3r

; generated by Slic3r 1.2.9 on 2016-01-01 at 22:08:02

; external perimeters extrusion width = 0.50mm
; perimeters extrusion width = 0.58mm
; infill extrusion width = 0.58mm
; solid infill extrusion width = 0.58mm
; top infill extrusion width = 0.58mm
; support material extrusion width = 0.50mm

M107
M104 S200 ; set temperature
M107
M190 S57 ; set bed temperature
G28 ; home all axes
M83;
G10 P0 S195 R160 ; Set tool 0 operating and standby temperatures
T0
M109 S200 ; wait for temperature to be reached
G21 ; set units to millimeters
G90 ; use absolute coordinates
M82 ; use absolute distances for extrusion

Thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

:-)

This is the bottom size i would guess , Printing overhangs like that requires a bit of cooling ,do you have an additional fan to cool the print?

like thisone:

Think it should be in the STL folder here: [github.com] 1123.stl

But you will have to get a 2nd PWM Fan(4wires) and a Diode(or a mosfet): Instructions and the fan are provided in this post: [forums.reprap.org]

Thanks for your reply, I do have some spare fans but I'm not sure if I can mount one like in the pic but I will try. So you think the problem is that the overhangs needs extra cooling? Yes you are right this is the bottom side. Maybe it's possible to set a delay parameter so that each layer gets some extra cooling? I will try for now to add an external fan that continuously blows on the printed part and see if that makes a difference.

You have the acrylic fan spacer? the fan duct goes on the part that hangs out at the bottom part of it. i do know they changed the spacer at some point(made it thicker i think) and dont know which version you have i will include the thiner version in this post

Yes, I have the acrylic fan spacer.

you will need atleast 2 M3 screws and screw them diagonaly across the fan duct and the fan(the fan should be 40x40x20 and can be 2 wire too and put it on Fan0 pins on the duet but as described in the post i linked erlier it could have some bad inflance on the duet.)

Damn, I just noticed that the cooling fan for the part is not working (I have placed the ormerod inside my firing place so it's not visible easily). But in previous tests it worked. Should I manually enable it before every print begins or should this be done automatically?

You mean the fan on the Hot End? it should be spining all the time unless you have DC42s sensor board. For the 2nd fan you set it in Slic3r or whatever you are using. i have it set to 15% minimal(you might need a bit more with 2 wire fan i remember using araund 40 to 50% to get anaugh power to the fan to spin anaugh when i had 2 wire fan). i suggest you test yourself how much it will work.

OK now that I stopped printing and letting everything cool down the fan is on! (yes, the fan on the hot end). But why the fan is off while printing? Do I need to set it in Slic3r manually?

No the fan on the hot end is not controlable by slic3r ,it should be on all time from turning on the printer. Do you have it wired like in this picture:

Sorry, NOT the hot-end fan - this working fine, I mean the part cooling fan.

If I understand well it's the one that is activated using the M106 command. This is not included in the initialization code the slic3r generates. Should I insert it manually?

You set it here:

You shouldnt need to slic3r will generate it if you have enabled cooling like in the picture above. But test it how much % you need.

Looking at the gcode generated by slic3r I find the M106 at line 3200 out of around 47000 lines. This means that the fan is not activated for the overhang layers printed in the very beginning. I can tweak the code manually but is this the right method? I did find the fan settings - I had to switch to advanced mode. Let's see....

if you set the minimum fan speed that speed will remain throuhout the print and it will only set it in 1 line(at the start) and will remain till another M106 command overides it. and put "disable fan for the first: #" to 1 or 2. and as i said you might need to set it to 30% and above to even start spining. IF you use Web interface you can also check Overide fan speed box and set it there manualy.

Thanks a lot Darathy for your help and advice! I have started a new print and the fan is now on right from the beginning and the overhang looks good now!
