Direct cable connection from Ormerod 2 to iMac.
August 20, 2016 02:57PM
Hello, I want to connect my Ormerod 2 directly to my apple iMac using either thunderbolt bridge or the ethernet cable socket.

The iMac is connected to the network by WiFi so the cable connection is not in use. The reason I want to do this is because I have been using a Home Plug (connection over house wiring) but this frequently drops out when I am printing.

Does anyone have an idea as to how to set this up in System Preferences please?

Any suggestions much appreciated.

I use this on my ormerod 2

There is a guide for it on the T3DP3D site

Hi

First thing to do is set your ormerod on a different subnet to your home network. So for example if your existing network is 192.168.1.x, you need to change the ormerod to 192.168.2.x, so in this example, 192.168.2.2. Do this by editing the config file on the SD card.

Now go into system preferences on the Mac, select the Ethernet controller and change the drop down box to 'manual'

Enter 192.168.2.1 into the address box, 255.255.255.0 into the netmask box, and leave the gateway blank.

You'll now be able to reach your ormerod on 192.168.2.2

Hi Steve, Thank you for your reply.

I tried your suggestions but still cannot connect.

There is also a Gateway entry on the SD card, do I change that line as well or just comment it out (M554)

There is no gateway entry in the iMac preferences, just the two line you mention plus router.

Many thanks,

Brian

OK, let's start from scratch with some almost definitely unique IP settings.

Set your Mac to:-

Address: 10.10.10.10
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: BLANK

Edit your config file on the Ormerod to:-

Address: 10.10.10.11
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.10.10.10 (not necessary, but won't hurt)

Now, from the Mac open a terminal window and type

ping 10.10.10.10 (just a sanity check but make sure it pings. Press CTRL+C to cancel)

next...

ping 10.10.10.11 (hopefully you'll get response. Again, press CTRL + C to cancel)

If this works, go to your browser and enter

http://10.10.10.11

If it's still not working, the issue may be that the Mac is unable to negotiate Auto MDI-X settings with the Ormerod. If that's the case, you either need a crossover ethernet cable or cheap network switch between the two devices.

Hello again Steve,

My apologies, it is now working fine. I had the last IP digit in the Mac preferences set to the printer (25) rather than the base (1)

Thank you for your help,

Much appreciated.
