I've seen the thermal runaway protection activated on my printer when there's too much cooling at the hotend - presumably the firmware judges the sensor is not giving a high enough reading to account for the energy being put into the element, and shuts down in case the sensor is faulty, to avoid overheating.
My question is, does the same happen in the opposite case: when the sensor reads too high a temperature, does the firmware realise there's a problem? Can the firmware be set to turn off the power supply in such a case? And would it remain vigilant to overheating even when nozzle heating is switched off?
If the answer to all these questions is yes, would this provide reasonably watertight protection against any failure in the heating circuit causing the hotend element to be stuck on?
