Help With Arduino Burning Up (Davinci to Ramps Conversion)
February 02, 2016 08:14PM
Hello all,
So I have been undergoing the process of converting my davinci 1.0 to a ramps arduino mega combo. I had wired up just about everything (steppers, thermistor, hot end, endstops) and was having an issue feeding the filament smoothly to the hotend (it was an aftermarket hotend) so I decided to revert back to the stock hotend. So I wired up the shock hotend\extruder and its thermistor and when I went to connect the computer to repetier on the pc I smelt smoke and saw smoke rising out of the board. I did not see where the smoke had risen from but assumed that it was from the ramps board due to that being the only thing I had touched so I ordered a replacement, transferred over the cables and was getting no response from the printer so I replaced the arduino mega and when I went to plug it in smoking again this time I saw exactly where it was coming from it was the arduino and I have attached a screen shot of the exact component. I am hoping someone can tell me what the component is, whether its replaceable and what in the world keep be causing it to burn up??
Thank you to all who read this and attempt to help ahead of time <3

That is a 5v regulator, its quite replaceable (its a NCP1117ST50T3G)

It blows most commonly when you have a short from 5v to gnd (but anything that sucks to much current from the weak 5v line will do it)

The most common cause for this on 'normal' machines is switch endstops that are wired backwards so the switch shorts +5v to gnd instead of S and GND

You can find them on ebay

Well I did order a 5 pack that will be here tomorrow so hopefully they will be of better quality and the boards will still be useable. Is there anyway to test that this is the issue on the second board? the first arduino that burnt up has no signs like the one posted no visible traces of damage so I am wondering with a multimeter is there a way to test that the regulator is the culprit as well? Also the jumper on the ramps board that dictates where the arduino gets power is there any way to upgrade this to make it more accurate?

To check for a bad regulator...

Plug in just the mega via a usb cable to your computer, upload blink as a test sketch it should work like normal
With sketch uploaded unplug the mega and power it from the dc jack (this also goes threw the voltage regulator) Does the led still blink? If the regulator isnt working at all, it wont run blink. You should also check 5v pins for 5 volts with a multimeter, as sometimes the regulator can half die, so it starts producing some other voltage

There is no jumper on the ramps like you describe.

The ramps provides the mega with power via the D1 diode to the vin pin on the mega.
The mega in turn generates 5v threw the regulator
