What to make of this?

I may have had the head a bit too close to the bed when I started my latest print, So I was anoyed, but not surprised when the filiment started slipping during the start of the second layer.

I can sometimes get it to continue by pushing the filiment past the ware spot while printing, but no go this time. sad smiley

So, I stopped the print and backed the filiment out to clean the hobbing.

What came out on the end of the filiment caused a W.T.F. moment. So, I'm posting a pic here.

Normaly I just get a slender string off the end.

What do you guys make of this?

WOW. I had one spool of 3mm ABS do lots of little fibers like a hemp rope unwind, but I've not seen what you just posted.

Maybe the hobbed bolt/gear/whatever you use tore it up on the way back out?

Cool!

I've only had something similar to this happen once. I was changing colors of PLA and was manually feeding filament faster than the hotend could melt it. You end up with a cool filament down the middle and a hot molten skin that is in contact with the walls. When I pulled it out it made a fibrous straw-like tail.
