If it's #2, DIY. You know how printers work, you know what sort of problems they have, now use that experience to design a machine that fixes the problems. You'll learn a lot more that way than just following someone else's BOM.
For that size of bed, use a design that moves it in Z or not at all. Check out CoreXY.
