Endstops, what side to mount them?

So I'm building a Prusa with Gen7 1.3.1. What side of the machine do I mount the endstops? I've decided the y motor is on the front. So would the y endstop be on the front too? would the x be on the right or left? and the z on the top or bottom?

Also, how does it work with only 3 endstops? How does it know not to move to far away from the endstop?

P.S. can anyone show me how they mounted their optical gen7 1.3.1 endstops? I've got printed parts to mount mechanical endstops but these do not fit the optical ones and they also don't seem to fit the 8mm rods.

X - to the left
Y - to the rear
Z - to the bottom

X and Y can both be flipped. Prints will come out rotated. Get only one wrong and prints will be mirrored.

I was a bit confused about where to place the endstops when first building also. I posted the question and got good replies. You might like to review that post. It's located here: [forums.reprap.org]

In relation to mounting the endstops, you may have to get creative if the brackets you have don't fit or mount on the threaded rod, until you have your printer running, then you can print mounting brackets that fit your endstops better.

This post on my blog shows how I first mounted opto-endstops. Once I got printing I printed better ones.

What you print depends on what your endstop looks like. Is there a picture of your endstop out there somewhere?

The sketch you did there is a good idea, but unfortunately shows the Y axis in the wrong direction!

It shows the Y axis in the same direction as yours does.

Those are the endstops I am using.

So if I understand correctly because the Y axis moves the bed the endstop has to go on the back so that the print head is on the most front edge of the print bed when at "home"?

Yes. Or reverse both Y and X, which has the advantage of homing the print bed towards you making it easier to retrieve the part. You could accomplish the same with a custom end gcode so no big deal either way.

Yes, homing the bed to the back is the equivalent of homing the printhead (Y axis) to the front, if the printer were of a design where the print head moved in a Y direction.

What are you going to do to mount the endstops? You'll need to rig some tabs/flags to break the endstop also. Anything will do that. A piece plastic or light aluminium. Just hotmelt the flag it in place to get you going.

I assumed you had the "Y" at the positive end of the axis, which is opposite to mine.

Otherwise, your diagram is ambiguous. The usual convention is that the arrow shows the positive direction, you have two arrows on each axis.
