Cartesian xy head vs xz head.

I am looking to build my second 3d printer and I was looking to compare Cartesian xy head vs Cartesian xz head printers.
I am wondering what are the pros and cons of each design?
I am looking to build a printer with a direct extruder, my current printer uses a bowden setup and I am looking for a machine that can print flexible filament.
I am also looking for a printer with a 200mm square build area or larger, the height does not mater as much because my current printer is a tall rostock delta printer and it can do any taller objects.
Thanks
Tanner

The XZ extruder motion implies moving the bed (and print) in Y. Throwing the print and the relatively massive bed back and forth at print speed can lead to all sorts of print quality problems, especially if the print has a small footprint on the bed and has any height.

If you move the bed in the Z axis, you can make it as massive as it needs to be for good performance (flat, thermally conductive, easily leveled, and prints stick) without worrying about print quality problems caused by lateral motion.
