Which one to Build.

Hi All,

I have been looking to build a RepRap for many months and always come up against the same question which one do I build, I don't want to build from a kit as I work in engineering so can get most parts like the Bar and bearing etc very cheap.

I just don't know which to build the Mendel Pro looks good as there looks to be a 3 colour version (www.reprappro.com) but then for a first build is it worth the complexity.

Also with any of the builds how easy is it to be the BOM and diagrams/software to build the PCB's as well again I work with the odd bit of electronics so some ATMEL work is not beyond me but I will need the software and diagrams.

All very confusing for a first timer so any help would be great.

Many opinions onthis ones for sure but I recommend the Mendel Prusa V2 as the best way to go for your first printer. They are a proven design and simple to build plus lots of people here have built one if you get stuck. All the parts are available worldwide and they turn out top quality prints.
Better yet, buy a kit from reputable supplier and save yourself the headache of sourcing all the parts.

I was in the same position as you a few months back. I also work in an engineering field although sourcing the hardware would've not been any easier for me than anyone else on the street.

I finally decided to go with a RepRapPro Mendel kit. I'm now really glad that I did, the build was straightforward and I didn't have to source the 30-odd bags of different bolts, washers, nuts, bearings, springs and odd bits and bobs. And then there's the laser cut MDF and aluminium parts...Plus the quality of the printed parts from RRP is very good, everything fitted very well with little or no fettling.

I am enjoying tuning up the printer and trying to get the best out of it. Would I have had more involvement if I'd gone with a "scratch build" and sourced all the components myself? Possibly. Or I might've given up partway through from lack of time, money or willpower. At least this way I now have a working printer and I can always print parts for a 2nd one!
