J-Head hot end resistor wiring solder problem...?
January 22, 2013 01:32AM
Hi, I've got a MK V J-Head with the 5.6Ohm resistor. I've had problems with it breaking away from the solder. I've made sure the connections are clean, soldered so there is solder around both the plug pins and resistor pins. The problem I am having is the solder appears to melt and eventually break connection. Is this a known issue with soldering hot ends and is there a better way to do make the connection?

Thanks.

Don’t try and solider it with normal electrical solider,
I guess you could find soem high temp stuff that might work but cheaper and easier either Crimp it or get hold of some terminal blocks

This sort of thing:

I tend to drip the plastic cover off as that can melt too, cover them up with a little bit of kapton tape so they can’t come into contact with the frame,

I use smaller ones to connect my thermistor.

Joy of this method is that it come apart easily if you need to remove the nozzle but is robust enough to deal with day to day printing

Phizinza - How close to the body of the resistor are you soldering the connecting wire? If you solder a connecting wire tat the end of the resistor wire without cutting any of the resistor lead off, you should not be getting to solder melting temperatures. Use high temperature heat shrink to cover the connection and the rest of the resistor lead though - the usual stuff melts at around 125C and is therefore not suitable.

I crimped my hot end resitor connection just to be safe, did not solder it.

Everything else has no issues with solder.

I'm soldering at the end of the resistor wires (not cut at all). I am also using PTFE insulation on the resistor wiring.

I'll try and find a small block to do it. Thanks.

Hi there,
I don't use solder on those joints either. I've a few photos and a description of my approach here on my blog, if you want to take a look at that. I use a small pop rivet as a joiner, with the centre pin and head removed!

That is a great idea. But I like to keep things with plugs or an easily connectable/disconnectable option. Just so when things go wrong it's easier to pull it all apart!

Thanks.

I've been using alligator clips.

They act like heat sinks to dissipate the heat before reaching the solder joint and are very easy to remove.

I do run them more vertically now. smiling smiley
