possible to use two a4988s to run nema 23?

I have a couple of 24kg/cm nema 23 motors, that i had planned on using with an old mill that i had, but they are 2 amps each. they do run on my 4988's but they stall after going past 250 rpm. i also have a couple extra a4988's i was planning on using for dual extruding, but i dont have the second extruder yet so they are just sitting around. my question is, is there a way to wire two a4988s in parrallel to drive one stepper motor. also im running ramps 1.4, on a modified prusa mendel.

No you can't wire stepper drivers in parallel. They are high frequency choppers and they would not be synchronised so would conflict with each other and burn out.

so what can i do then, is there a way to wire the output of the 4988 to a set of high amperage transistors?

No but there are other chips in the Allegro series designed to use external FETs.
