Buying My First Printer, Need Advice
February 07, 2013 04:02PM
I've been interested in getting a printer for awhile now and just now got the money for it. I found this and was wondering if anyone had any advice about it:

I know I'll need to buy the printed parts separately, but is there anything about this that might be problematic? From cross-referencing it with the Mendel BOM on the wiki, it seems it has everything it needs by the plastic parts. Also, speaking of the printed plastic parts, I've found some for about $58 on eBay ($46 with $12 shipping). Think I could realistically find them cheaper anywhere else?

Thanks,

- Alec

If you're talking about their Prusa Kits, they are of good quality. I've ordered a few.

Sometimes you might need to smooth an end of the threaded rods to get the nuts on, but mostly it's all good.

I would recommend getting the J-head hot-end from hotends.com.

I tried the build-it your self hotends, (went through 5..) and it will teach you much, but not really worth the aggravation.

Hi
I am preparing to buy parts from another decendant of reprap from Portabee. it is listed for $570 us dollars. Should be the best option for me to get my hand on 3D prineter.

Thanks. Does the kit I found not come with a hot end? I thought it was part of the extruder.

Also, is there a better place to get filament from? $32 for 1.5 kg seems a bit pricey.

Also, is there anything (else) that this kit doesn't come with that I'll need besides the printed parts?

Hi,

usually those kits come with everything you need to start ptinting, but in order to print consistently you will need a bunch of other parts. To name a few:
wrenches, caliper, blue tape, spool holder, cooling fan + support, sharp knife
ABS related: Kapton tape and acetone

I already either have most of those or know where to get them. Where could I find a spool holder, though? Also, what's blue tape?

Blue tape is the tape used for masking for painting. You can find it at any hardware - at least in the US.

Oh, blue masking tape. Yeah, I can get that. What about the spool holder, though?

Re-looked through the parts of my last order...

They are including the hot-end, but it is the build it your self kit.
The build instructions are on there site.
If you do built it, follow the instructions carefully. I rushed my first one and it was a quick failure.

Since this is somewhat related to the topic of buying a first time kit, I was hoping someone could help.

A few weeks ago I was on a site that offered full Mendel kits, you could choose upgrades, different coloured printed parts, upgrades to the electronics etc....but I can't for the life of me remember what site it was LOL. Any ideas?

Found it, please disregard. It was MakerFarm smiling smiley

Here is a picture of my spool holder. I used the frame jig and a couple of pieces of wood.

Here also is a link to my parts list, you might spot something you need that you don't have
