My first 3D printer
March 27, 2013 04:23AM
I wanted a 3d printer for quiet a while now and I decided to start building. I am going to start buying next week. I wanted to know if if the following items would be compatible.
[printrbot.com]

All-In-All it would cost me $721. What could I do to lower the price? Any help will be much appreciated.

It looks good to me. I personally wouldn't buy the Printrbot power supply. It is under powered for most uses. You want to get more amps on the 12v line. I have a Xbox 360 power supply the 203w one puts out more wattage and amps then the diablotek power supply. I would recommend a 500 w with 12v line at 20+ amps. It will suit most of your future needs as well. Other than that I think your in good shape. You could also email maker gear and ask them if your list is compatible and if they would have any recommendations on parts.

An easy to use 12v 30A power supply: [www.ebay.com]

Alternative to capton is PET, it's cheaper and tougher: [www.mcmaster.com]

Do I buy the film or the sheets?

I bought the larger of the adhesive backed film, 8689K44. I cut it down to fit the borosilicate glass I use for printing on. To apply, spray soapy water on the PET and the glass. The spray lets you move the adhesive backed PET around before squeegying in place.

You more than likely will need kapton tape for other things like your thermisister and a few other things.

I will get the kapton tape, all i need is the base so I can print then I will do better upgrades.

You don't need kapton tape for the bed, you can print on the glass using the abs juice or hairspray

Makerfarm is a great company to deal with. Bought all my filament from them, as well as J-head, extruder, electronics etc.

I have Gen6. I'd upgrade to the RAMPS electronics, not familiar with printrboard.

You could save a little by buying the smooth and threaded rods in lengths and cutting them yourself
